I just wish I had a bigger more realistic skull... I stole this one from my fish tank. I really don't think this is a suitable tribute to the fantastical jjbeguin.

You might like to see the original original, by Robert Mapplethorpe

or search for Mapplethorpe & skull - but don't be surprised if you get a lot of homoerotic nudes and flowers

*** CRITQUE CLUB RESPONSE ***

As mentioned in my comment earlier, one thing that really distracts me here is the tony catchlight showing in the shadowed eyesocket of the human face. We need it either to not be there, or for there to be more of it so the ghost of an eye is coming up.

I like the composition of this pretty much. The lighting is workmanlike and appropriate to the topic. The higlights on the model's cheek and the skull's occipital arch are a little blocked; it would be nice if there were a trace of detail in these places. We could use a tad more depth-of-field as well.

Referring to JJ's original, this is an interesting and amusing take on it. I like that you haven't just copied his composition, but used it as a springboard to your own, slyly humorous (the skull, after all, is basically a cartoon skull) interpretation. He's (relative to you) an old man, and you're a young man (assuming you're the model); it's fitting that you are a little less somber in your own contemplation of mortality.

While not bearing the seriousness of the original, this image is very well done and the b/w rendering is captivating. The half moon facial expression adds great interest. Bumping up.

I need more sharpness to feel good about this. the tiny eyetrap where the shadowed eye should be is distracting as hell...

Like the silences in music the black areas are so important.

while I like his lighting and his skull better than yours, this is still an impactful image. Well done!
