Pukeko - Native New Zealand Bird (this one, unlike the Kiwi, can even fly! :) Well, sort of...
"In places where there is plenty of cover, Pukeko prefer to run or swim to safety but in more open spaces they do fly for short distances. Their take off is labored and they are awkward flyers, flying with feet dangling and often crash landing into a tree or scrub."
This photo was my crissy present, taken Christmas Day, 2004.
(The DPC Submit Photo page can't cope with the "special rules" allowing this entry exposure to be any time in 2004, hence the in accurate date for the entry.)

Good focus within shallow DOF, interesting splash of color in an otherwise rather monochome scene. |

this is a fun image. i love how the background sort of mimics the colors normally associated with the peafowl's plummage. nice expression and composition. good luck with this, and all the challenges yet to come! |

Heheh, an amusing critter for sure. I like the simplistic nature of this image. |

Very sharp focus! I also like the use of thirds in where the bird is standing, AND the different colors of the vegatation. How'd you get him/her to look right at you??? |

IMO the bird seems to be too much in the shadow. The blue seems to be muted like you were taking a picture of the field and the bird just happened to be there. And the dead space seems too busy. My eyes tend to follow the grass rather than the subject. I do like the focus of the bird and the DOF in this shot. Gave it a 6. |
