Challenge: Best of 2004 (Advanced Editing III*)
Camera: Nikon D70
Location: Denali National Park, Alaska
Date: Aug 8, 2004
Aperture: f/22
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/30
Galleries: Landscape, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Jan 4, 2005

This was taken during my photography workshop in Denali National Park, Alaska last August. We had just finished a lesson and were given 30 minutes to go shoot. I had spotted this pond from atop our hill, and loaded my gear and hiked down for some shots.

I used a ND4 and Circular Polarizer for this shot. I spent a fair amount of time positioning my tripod so I could achieve the best reflection in the pond. Short of some ripples in the water, this image turned out exactly as I had seen it in my minds eye.

Post processing consisted of converting to b/w, cropping, and dodging and burning to give it more depth.

Nice, dynamic composition. The foreground elements add great depth and serve as great natural frames. Beautiful sky as well. I would love to see this one in color.

You forgot to burn the sky in the water. This gives the shot a rather unballanced feeling to it. Like the overall tonality, but getting a little tired of the burnt sky treatment.

Lovely scene - great composition.

There's a problem here for me which is one of excessive burning, resulting in an artificial and overpowering sky. As you can see how the sky really looked in the reflection, I would have been inclined to exercise restraint since your scene was lovely anyway.

Superb treatment on this. The black-as-night clouds are a bit heavy, but the rest of the photo makes up for that . Stunning.

Wow. This takes on a great deal of drama and detail with this processing. Great choice. 9.

Ansel Adams eat your heart out. Yet another powerful black and white landscape. I like the almost metalic feel to the image. Storm is coming in. 10

Nicely timed and composed photograph, with good detail. Nice choice of tone chosen to add to the cold feel in it. ((8))

on one hand, this is a stirring image, on the other, the more i look at it, the more it loses its initial impact. i think the problem i'm having is that all the detail in the mid-ground is running together, creating a visual miasma. i think this would have been much better in color. good luck!

Wow this looks Ansel Adams like, except it's Danny Shaw (I saw your "Come see my photos in a gallery" thread, looked at the image, thought of this, then compared the two, and knew this was yours). Awsome tones, lovely dramitic scene.

Nice photo. The B&W toning is very good.
Unfortunately there is a lot of clutter in the centre. I mean, many high detailed objects like the rocks, bushes and trees. The unfortunate part is that the 640 wide limit of DPC doesn't do it justice. I expect it looks much better at 800 wide.
I like the soft mood of the mountain. The last 10 to 15% of the right side doesn'tt add much to the composition except to keep a balance between the reeds on the left and right. 7

It´s a great shot and one I would have been proud of myself. However, in my personal opinion it´s a bit too dramatic, the clouds kind of steal the attention here from this lovely landscape and it´s a bit too monotone but otherwise great, I gave it an 8.

if you burn the sky you should also burn the reflection in the water. It feels unbalanced now with the strong contrast in the sky.

I think this could be a cracking image and b/w works well, there just seems like you have packed in maximum detail. I would like to see more of the mountain and that moody sky.

Beautiful serene vista, but such harsh contrast. Interesting approach, but doesn't quite come together for me. Maybe because the frame so full of high contrast details?

Stunning X 10 - love the colour cast here - it's almost blueish. Terrific and one of my favourites so far. The reeds in the foreground take this from a solid 6+ landscape shot to one that should wind up above 7. Minor nitpicking time - the burning on the left above the mountain is a bit over the top.

lots of haloing around the finer details, which is usually an indication of oversharpening, either in-camera or after the fact in post processing.

That aside, i like that you left the reeds in the shot. nice and deep DOF, and the burning of the clouds adds to the drama.

well done.
