Idea:
I initially planned to take a shot of Schumanns native house and the skyscraper just above it, but then decided for this shot, taken from a nearby location: The "Béinchen" (Little Bean), the bridge which relies the "Porte des Bons-Malades" (Gate of the Good Ill) with the "Porte d'Eich" (Gate of Oak) was built in 1684/85 and was part of the defense ring of the City of Luxembourg. The "Rout Bréck" (Red Bridge), actually called "Pont Grand-Duchesse Charlotte" ("Grand-Duchess Charlotte Bridge), was built in 1966 and links the centre of Luxembourg City with the Kirchberg, where all the European stuff is for the next sixth months.
Setup:
I put my father's camera with the tripod as close to the river as I could without climbing any fences, waited fot the clouds not to cover the sun and tried some variations. It was not until post processing when I realized that the cheap wide-angle lens attached to the G2 caused some bad distortions in the corners. I'm not going to use that lens again. On my homepage www.gloda.net you'll find some outtakes and a panorama shot of the valley (in Gloda Designs).
Post Processing:
Brightness/Contrast
HSL to get selective desaturation on the "Rout Bréck". I want the surrounding to look old, hence the b/w in contrast with the new, modern steel bridge. Due to the limits of basic editing, some red spots remain throughout the image. I hope noone's going to look that close ;)
Comments:
I want to try this shot again with a better camera and with a good wide angle lens.
I don't know what others are going to think about the selective desat. I hope they see the reason why I did it. I made the mistake of using desat just for the sake of it with 'Firefox'. |

Wonderfully done with your selective desaturation. A very nice way of introducing new into old. The trees up top look like they are moving in the wind, which gives the photograph motion. Great job! |

I love this! The black and white thing with blasts of pure pigment has always been an eyecatcher for me, and this one obviously displays old and new. Two birds with one stone:) |

The red seems a little too bright. |

I like the use of color on the newer structure, but it's a little too bold for me. |

I would like this one with full colours. The natural colours of the stone bridge and nature would be opposing enough with the unnatural reds of the new bridge. Composition is great and the subject is loveable, too. I am very curious about the full-coloured version, because personally I think making pastel colours for the yet desaturated elements would have made your shot better. This way it's a bit agressive for me. If it was the purpose, it works well, but be careful with selective desaturation. I love this technique, too, anyway. :-) |

How did you do the color change. I am new and want to learn all these tricks. Thanks! |

A good example of new and old but a very curious mix of forms. I hope the new bridge is not really painted bright red |

This is really a mgnificent capture and the colorizing of the bridge was a wise decision. I feel that Sepia may have been better that B&W but otherwise....a great entry. |

this is too obvious. I feel like you have no faith in your audience, so you underline the point in red. Instead of going all the way to sepia in the rest of the image, maybe just subtley scale back on the saturation to make the bridge "pop", but without beating me over the head with it. Subtle is the key word for effect work. |

this isnt selective desat? quite stunning.. |

The selective color really doesn't work and is really over-done in any case -- perhaps a duotone would have been a better choice. |

This challenge was basic edited. It's a nice picture but obviously advanced edited. |

Don't really see the need for the selective desat here, I would have preferred it to me all B&W. Looks blurred in parts, especially around the edges and I can see 'jaggies' on the top bridge. |
