Challenge: 1970s (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Location: In our cellar
Date: Feb 21, 2005
Aperture: F7.1
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/200
Date Uploaded: Feb 21, 2005

* Photo copy of South East Asia map onto photo paper.
* Sprinkle with Cigarette lighter liquid and set alight.
* Camera with 200mm lens approx 3 meters from "fire"

It is actually far less dangerous than it looks.

This was the 4th attempt as the flames were initially far to white.
I then directed a lot of lights onto the map, which allowed me to use a faster shutter speed and also to close the lens slightly. I had to use ISO 100 as 400 was giving me a lot of "noise".

I hope you enjoy it

For the record this was one of my persoanl top 3 picks. It is a great technical shot and certainly fits the theme for the challenge. Keep up the great work.

Great job; but the red border is loud and distracting.

I'm not crazy about the border. It distracts from the main image.

Great idea!
Although I find the border distracting and it seems it's not the map that burns and not even some alcohol on it. Would have been much more real.

I find your picture to portray the political and protest of the early 70's. Very nice effect, with good color, focus and focal point. I find the border a bit large and distracting IMO. Still good photograph. 7

Original idea and very nice effect. I wonder how you did that... However, I think the red border is too large and too red! This would be much better with a more discrete one.

Because we bailed the French's asses again, and got stuck in their mire.

Great idea. Tell us, did you destroy this map to make the photo, or was there an intervening surface?

This is a very poweful statement to those of us old enough to remember the sacrifices made by our brothers... but it may be lost on several DPC members. I really do like this and it is to date my favorite. I am certain I will be back to upgrade the score once I have completed viewing all the submissions.

Ugh - the border is awful! the idea is good.

Great idea. Border is a little much for the photo, but probably not for the 70s theme. 8

Reminds me of TV programme Bonanza. that was the 60's? How did you do this? 6

This is sweet. When I first looked at this, I wasn't so crazy about the red and black border, but it really adds to the theme. Good work.

I like the idea and it's a well-exposed capture of the fire

Great concept and very well done. You could have titled this one "Hue" and that would have worked too.

Red lines can distort the main sense of the photo. Maybe thinner...

Red border is way too much...creative image though..

Nice idea, good composition, I am a bit ambiguous about the red border. (9)

Easily the strongest of all the 'protest' images, well done -9

This red framing really takes away from the fire effect. My eyes go back to it all the time. Other than that, you nailed the challenge and very good capture of the flames... this is hard to do right. 7.
