Would benefit from an uncentered composition. Perhaps a landscape orientation with the snarled branches on one side and more sand shown.

Composition: The clouds on this day look interesting. Maybe crouching down lower to cut out some of the uninteresting ground would help
Technical: Tone range could be expanded quite a bit. Greys are extremely dominant. Shot has a fair amount of grain too.
Appeal: Appeal could be helped by suggestion in my "composition" comment
Challenge: fits challenge ok

The background is blurred in my estimation, taking away from that Ansel quality of style. I like the textures and feel to the subject.

Good work with the black and white but post processing has made some grain visible. I like your choice of subject but that branch sticking out of shot leads the eye out of shot too. 7
