Challenge: In the Beginning... (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Waunakee, Wisconsin, friend's living room
Date: Mar 25, 2005
Aperture: f 8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1 second
Galleries: Vintage, Still Life
Date Uploaded: Mar 26, 2005

Raw conversion, curves (to set color balance), USM, crop, tweak hue/saturation a bit to reduce the reds. Save for web.

I suspected that this challenge would attract a large number of entries based on the idea of God creating (Bible themes, sunsets and sunrises, babies, etc.), and I wanted immediately to go with a natural history orientation. Thanks to my friend Mike for letting me use his props, and for all his ideas and assistance with this shoot. His idea to include a portrait of Darwin was truly inspired! I shot many different looks on this still life, some were simply too cluttered, and some were extremely simple. This was one of the middle-ground shots.

I felt this should have placed higher; it was a beatifully laid out still life with soft earthen tone..it may have been the subject matter?!

Interesting collection of artifacts. Fitting for challenge. I like the layout. I would ahve liked to see what is under the magnifying glass a bit better. There are some odd reddish tones on either side of the fossil that don't seem to work right.

Feather is cropped a bit too much for me.

Wow - where did you get all that stuff. Nice idea. The picture is crisp, and while there are a lot of items, it's not cluttered at all!

This is so professional and rich in detail and concept. The lighting on the binocluars is just amazing. The whole picture is for that matter. I love the conceptual connection to the challenge, also.

nice collection of bits - very appropriate. maybe just the quill leading us out of frame could have been moved or placed more fully in frame.

Was there life before the ninteenth century? I guess ninteenth century changed the way we view our beginnings. Okay, got the connection. Nice photo.

Ballsy photo! For what can be seen as a "creationist theme" you dared to challenge the standard many people took with this challenge, I like that. Composition could have been a little stronger (feather is partially out of frame and the front corner on the right of the table doesn't need to be there). While these may be stylistic choices on your part, I don't think they add anything to the shot. But good work - 8
