Yes, it is upside down. There are a couple of clues that this is true. First, all the liquid is at the top of the bottle with a large air bubble at the bottom. (Notice how the straw sticks into it.) There is also a drip of soda at the tip of the straw just starting to fall "upward." I glued the bottle and "licorice" to the board and used static electricity with the balloons.

I really can't believe that so many people looked at this and still didn't realize it was upside down. How much time do you think people are really taking to look if they couldn't see? Personally, I thought it was a very clever and unique idea and I'm guessing you would have scored so much better if folks would have just "gotten" the whole thing. And no, I didn't comment.....I'm trying to get better with that...I worked overtime that week every night. Excuses, excuses...but I hope it's not too late to compliment the fine job you did and the excellent way you chose to present the challenge to us.

A couple of quick comments.

The light portion in the middle of the shot appears to be a lens flair of some kind. The reason it didn't get "fixed" is actually pretty simple: on my computer at home, it's not there. This is yet another of those monitor calibration problems. I believe my monitor is calibrated correctly using Adobe Gamma, but I may be wrong -- or maybe it's yours... Secondly, after having it pointed out, I tried to fix it using levels, and I don't think it's possible without radically altering the other colors. If someone would like to show me I'm wrong, I'd very much like to learn because I don't know how.

A number of people mentioned using less soda. I could have, but I didn't want it to be blatantly obvious. Besides, I have the feeling that if I had used less, I would have had people telling me I should have used more.

Subtlety was also a comment made by a number of people. Some thought it was too much and some thought it was great. My goal was not to make this easy to see. I hoped that knowing it was upside down, people would take an initial look, not see what was upside down, and look harder. I do that with photos when I can't see the challenge aspect -- in fact, I probably spend more time looking at photos I don't get than photos I do. I was also realistic, though, and didn't expect everybody to see it -- and I was OK with that.

Finally, maybe I should have used a different kind of soda. I think some of the people who couldn't see the upside down were unable to because they thought the air bubble at the bottom of the bottle was the "cream" portion of the soda.

For those of you who recognized this as an ad shot, it is. It just happens to be upside down as well.

This is clearly very well done but I'm not clear on why it was done other than the fact that you could. Especially when it looks so normal that it required a disclaimer on it. Other than the drip at the tip of the straw I wish there was something else happening that looks impossible.

I dont believe the ad min note. How on earth is this relative to the upside down challenge and not the advertisement challenge? The balloons in the bottle?
05/19/2002 09:46:00 PM
Sometimes the small details don't have such a great effect.
05/19/2002 07:54:00 PM
If you had emptied the bottle a bit more, it would have been awesome. 9/10

Sorry, but I just don't get this one. It may be a cultural thing (I'm in the UK and had to look up what Weinhradt Cream Soda is!) and if I was familiar with the product I'd spot what was upside down about it. Still, very nicely photographed - the focusing could have done with being just a bit sharper (the orange swirly things look more blurred than necessary). Looking forward to the explanation of this one.

Tricky, tricky, tricky. Nice job, unfortunately, I'm afraid a lot of people won't take the time to look closely at it and see that it is "upside down," or appears to be. Nice color contrast and set-up.
05/18/2002 07:37:00 AM
Nice effect with the cream on the bottom!
05/17/2002 10:32:00 AM
This would have made a perfect ad, but I don't see the upside down in it. Sorry
05/17/2002 12:29:00 AM
maybe i'm missing something? or is it just the reflection in the bottle. i don't like it
05/17/2002 12:26:00 AM
I idea is cute, and I like the colors. There seems to be a light spot in the center of the photo.
05/16/2002 10:41:00 PM
i really don't get how this is upside down, maybe its because i am not familiar with the product.
05/16/2002 07:36:00 PM
I enjoy this kind of photo and can't wait to see your explination. You must have used glue. good job
05/16/2002 12:55:00 PM
I'm stomped. things are sidewaysbut not upside down
05/16/2002 12:43:00 PM
i don't see it
05/16/2002 12:22:00 AM
Nice color and setup!
05/15/2002 01:20:00 PM
Good shot, very subtle. Cant help thinking you could have used a levels adjustment to make the background a uniform black.
05/15/2002 11:31:00 AM
Nice photo, it does seem better suited to last week's challenge. Sorry, but I don't get it. Photo 9 Creativity ??? my bad, I don't get it. Upsidedown ???
I really don't get it. total score 5 (sorry, but I still don't get it.)
05/15/2002 11:03:00 AM
The bottle should be 1/2 empty and the droplet on the straw bigger, with a point of light in it, cos Im still not sure if this is upside down, and these changes would make realisation 'hit' rather than 'I guess'.
05/15/2002 08:49:00 AM
oh, now i get it! it's good.
05/15/2002 08:04:00 AM
I'm struggling to find the upside-downess (did I just invent a word?) of this shot. Perhaps when I come back and have a second or third look. Regardless, it's a fantastic photograph.
05/14/2002 12:04:00 PM
I really enjoyed this photo. It was Escheresque to me in that, at first glance, I think I see the entire photo, and then, after looking for a few moments, the reality of the photo hits me, and I realize that all of my assumptions were wrong. Great job, and excellent subtlety.

How did you do that? Is everything glued upside down?
05/14/2002 07:49:00 AM
Based on the title, I'm looking for something that's not 'quite right' - upside down - in this photo. The balloons are on the ground, but they might not be helium. There's a strange grey band on the bottom of the bottle, that I guess could be air, supported by the fact that the bottle is abnormally full at the top. It's certainly not screaming "upside-down" to me. I may be dense, but I admit that I'm missing it. I'm guessing that it's actually really upside-down and glued down then flipped?Otherwise though, a very nice photo, minor distractions with the glare on the surface of the table.
05/14/2002 06:41:00 AM
Great photo. How did you do it?
05/14/2002 12:45:00 AM
I saw something about (I think) this photo in the forums, so I wasn't as caught by surprise as I might have been. I expect they'll be asking you to show off your setup for this shot.
05/13/2002 10:07:00 PM
I don't understand what's upside down. The cream? Nice pic, not sure how successful it is in the category though.
05/13/2002 07:56:00 PM
Where's the upside down part???
05/13/2002 04:49:00 PM
really
05/13/2002 04:15:00 PM
I dont get it? How is this upside down?
05/13/2002 03:33:00 PM
Bravo, well done.
05/13/2002 02:32:00 PM
umm...is this an advertisement instead of upside down?
05/13/2002 12:08:00 PM
Too subtle, I missed this the first time. Now I see it.
05/13/2002 11:14:00 AM
I don't see what is upside down here.
05/13/2002 10:49:00 AM
Almost a little to subtle -7
05/13/2002 10:36:00 AM
ok so if this isn't a leftover from the advertising challenge this is the best upside down i've ever seen but i'm not sure but it sure looks upside down especially if that 'clear' at the bottom of the bottle is air but i don't know this drink so it may be the 'cream' versus being air and it appears there's a drip on the straw but it could be just a bubble but if it IS a drip and if that IS air - you're in my top 3 and i can't wait to find out how the HECK you did this!!!
05/13/2002 10:21:00 AM
Good shot. Might have been better with less soda in the bottle.
05/13/2002 09:19:00 AM
Oops, scratch my last comment. Saw it just when I clicked away. Should have another cup of coffee before judging . . .
05/13/2002 07:42:00 AM
by far and away my favorite drink
05/13/2002 02:41:00 PM
no, we must have tomas kemper. =)
05/13/2002 05:46:00 AM
Um... I think you are a week late. Advertisements was last week. This week is upside down. I feel so sorry for you, you are gonna have to sit and wait the entire week and watch 50 comments come in with everyone telling you the same thing. :)
05/13/2002 04:47:00 AM
I'm gonna score this shot better than I normally would have but it's a week late... This is a nice product shot but this week's challenge is 'upside down' and I don't see any sign of upside down in this photo. I really would have loved to vote on this shot in last week's challenge. This is very nice! Score = 5 for nice presentation and everything else but I can't do better than that in the current challenge... - REvisiting this photo I do believe I see the upside down :) This is challenging to see but it's upside down alright!!
05/13/2002 03:52:00 AM
interesting upside-down photo...
05/13/2002 01:02:00 AM
Where's the upside down? Am I missing something?
