Challenge: Symmetry (Classic Editing)
Camera: Konica KD-400Z
Location: Wellsville Canyon, Northern Utah USA
Date: Mar 27, 2003
Aperture: f4.7
ISO: 100
Shutter: 287/10000
Galleries: Landscape, Panoramic
Date Uploaded: Mar 29, 2003

I captured this shot on my way home from work after a spring snowstorm. The clouds were dissipating quickly, and the sun was setting, but the scene held out long enough for several frames. I felt this one best illustrated 'symmetry'.

I originally planned to shoot this one for myself (not for the challenge) but quickly realized the incredible reflection and symmetry in the shallow lake beneath the mountain peaks.

I guess we'll be seeing this place like this again now that our first snowfall has come! My goal this winter is to shoot this same place and get a shot almost as good as this one. Again the clarity is so lovely here. Not a stray pixel anywhere, and everything is clean and shiny!

WOW! What a truly wonderful photograph! Had I been a member of this website when you entered this in the contest, I would've easily given it a huge 10! I love the crispness, clarity, and color. Great shot...well done!

Who in their right mind would give this image a 1? This image is at least as good as mine, and I'd venture to say probably better. Very nice work!!!

Thanks (to all) for the wonderful comments! I was definitely lucky to have a chance to capture this shot... I actually shot it through one of the openings of a wire mesh fence while stopped on the side of the highway.

And while it would have been fantastic to have 'placed' with a ribbon, I'm pleasantly pleased that it performed as well as it did. In retrospect, I might have performed slightly better if I had cropped a bit tighter (to remove the snow at the lower left corner). My take on it was that it put the entire scene in perspective, and gave it more of a sense of place and reality. I've tried it both ways, and I'm still not sure I would have done things differently.

The surprising piece to me was that there were as many votes in the 1-3 point range... (I guess some folks just must have been jealous? :-) ).

hello from the Critique Club!

This is an amazing shot especially appropriate for the Symmetry Challenge.
The composition is great - I like the way my eye travels through and along the horizon and the reflection has great colors to match the actual mountains. The tones in this image are very soothing .. and can surely show that the snow is fresh as you titled it. i like the touch of brown along the waterline it adds a nice touch to the over all effect.
Great Job! Ayme

It's a darn shame that you didn't bag some sort of ribbon for this beautiful work... Still, congrats on the fine finish!

This shot is amazing. The water is perfect, the reflection is extraordinary. I love the muted colors and spacing. I wish a tiny bit was cropped from the bottom.

This is my favorite of this week. Wonderful shot, I would like it a little better if the shore of the lake was not visible in the shot or the sticks and twings in the shallow water, Score 10 - Corey

Suggestion: Crop it a little so that it is completly symmetric and than rotate it 90 degrees, I think that's gonna give it a nice effect (if you like abstract ;-) ) Nice pic!

Nice location. Could have cropped a little more from the bottom to enhance the symmetry.
