I like the out of focus effect here.
Nostalgic for childhood playground... fuzzy memory, I get it - sorry others did not.
I don't like the sliding board on the right side of the frame - distracting.
And the bokeh isn't the most pleasing - donut shpaed on that one light point at the perspective convergence.
Nice shot and like the feel.

The steps of How to Win the Brown Ribbon is guidelines, not rules for doing it. If you followed all thet steps, you'd be high in the running for a brown.
According to your photo I think that:
STEP ONE: Do not fit your photo to the challenge.
- Think that is kindof impossible to do in a free study.
STEP TWO: Take a low quality photo in camera.
- I think the blur and tilt meets this
STEP THREE: Over-edit to enhance the low quality of the photo.
- Nope, I don't think you edited it.
STEP FOUR: Use an obscure, overly-long, misspeled or redundant title.
- Nope, title is normal
STEP FIVE: Laugh out loud.
- Hope you did =)
It is interesting to get a brown with only meeting one section of the "criteria" (although I hope you met the Laugh out loud part ). A free study is a premium place fo this: people expect high quality images and it is impossible not to meet the challenge. I like your idea experimental photography though; it may be ludicrous, but so was Picasso's idea of cubism when he first started. |

I presume you mean the entering of the photo in the challenge was the experiment. It was not. Although there is always the stray chance of the inexplicable happening, this shot was destined for brown. The photo itself was an experiment.
Interestingly, the shot doesn't meet any of charliebaker's How to Win the Brown Ribbon, except perhaps 2, although the focus is necessarily the way it is.
The shot was not taken to get the brown and it is among my favourites for the challenge period. |

I liked it - gave you a 5. Thought it captured a memory-type image quite well. However, for swings, I think that the viewpoint needed to be lower (child height), that is if you were going for the "fading childhood memory thing that I think that you were. |

Not being mean but this is one of the worst photos I have ever seen. The focus is very bad. What would make you submit something like this? |

C'mon! You know it's a bad picture... |

Soft focus I can handle, but this seems to be obliterated totally. A couple of things might have made a difference for me -- if the person (?) in red wasn't cut out of the picture and more prominent, it wouldn't draw the eyes out of the frame. Or if either the red person or slide was cropped out. As it is, the two red objects compete for the attention of my eyes.
That said, I can only assume this looks like you wanted it to look, so good luck in the challenge! |

the out of focus blur is a bit too over the top for my tastes, but is an intruiging effect. I think the child should be the focal point of the image shame they are half cropped out. |

hmmm, could do with something in focus |

I'm no quite understanding this shot. I wish something was in focus to bring my attention to. |

you were myopic when you were a child ? or you had a list to starboard?
i think there are better ways to show nostalgia than a blurry snapshot

i could go with this basic idea, even shot the way it is, if the person on the left was at least a third the way into the frame. as it is, there's not enough there for me to really grab onto. i looks like it could have a lot of potential, and i'd encourage you to to go back and try it again--there's no telling what you'll come up with... |

What is the subject of this picture? If it is the child swinging, he is partly out of the frame and really blurry. The swingset itself is tilted to one side, and is also very blurry. |

If this is meant to be blurred then the effect does not work for me. |

Very out of focus. Not sure what it is to convey. |

ow! my eyes hurt tying to focus on your photo. This is not a good shot, but keep trying |

I'm not sure what you were hoping to acheive here but a little focus is always a good thing. |

I rarely do give bad comments, but if this is your best shot for a free study lasting a full month... I wish you never post a picture that you think is bad. 1 |

Sorry, looks like an out-of-focus snapshot rather than an impressionistic arty-farty shot. |

um....nothing is in focus |

I wonder if it was supposed to be out of focus. Some out of focus pctures can be good in my opinion but I don't get this one. |

|

I would guess that something "should" be in focus. This is a photography challenge. |

i know what you were going for here, but it just doesnt work IMO

I'm going to assume this was intentional. If not I feel silly, and you should hang up your camera!!! JK - nice work 7 |

I don't understand this photo, there isn't anything to focus on? |

A brave entry for sure!
I like it. Maybe the brightly coloured kid on the left should be fully in the frame? I dunno.
The angle you've chosen is great and the title hammers the whole thing home. |

even though this is all blurred, I like the suggestibility of it |

I understand what you are doing here, but it would have been a bit better (I think) if some little thing was in focus. But experimentation is part of the process. Good luck. |

I am assuming the blur of this shot was meant to convey how the old times fade. Interesting idea, but, a bit too blurry for me...it's hard to look at. |

I like the idea however I think a little less blur would work better. |

I think I understand what you are trying to do here - the out of focus view is supposed to suggest that this is a nostalgic view. I think it might have worked better if you composed the shot with a central object that suggests what the viewer is encouraged to be nostalgic about. |

A bit too much softness ;-) |

You're kidding right? I don't see the appeal of this at all. Sorry. |

Sorry, not working for me, I don´t find anything interesting about this shot at all and gave it a 1. Hope you intentionally are aiming for the brown ribbon, if you are not and are just starting out I implore you to try and stick too the basics and at least have the shot in focus next time... |

I really don't get noslagia from this...just REALLY blurry. |

he he he, funny. You WERE joking, right? It's making my eyes water.
I just showed it to hubby and got a: "What the hell is that?" |
