Challenge: Minimalism (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Location: Outside my house, shot against a bush.
Date: Apr 23, 2005
Aperture: 10
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/400

I got this idea when I was walking to class and saw a dandelion in the grass. I figured it would be pretty interesting 'minimalist' picture if I got a single seed floating through the air. To shoot one of these things actually 'floating' however, proved to be a huge pain, especially in the wind we were having.

Instead, I pulled the ballpoint tip off of a pen and glued the seed to the tip. After I shot the picture, I just cropped the pen out of the picture and adjusted the levels, saturation, and contrast.

I agree with most of the comments that say this should be in in the full frame. If I can get some really thin thread or fishing line I would really like to try this shot again.

I would like this better if it weren't touching the edge of the frame

Sweet idea, but I wish the seed was actually drifting inside the frame rather than stuck [supported?] outside.

very neat

Would have been so much better with a background that was one color or one shade of green and you should crop out the blue spot in the corner, very distracting.

It must be dandelion season! This has so much more appeal than many of those similar subjects. Why? Because you chose one seed and it's sharp. Because the background has complex interest without pulling too much on your subject--there is tension, but the eye always returns to the seed. Two things that could make this better: 1. crop out the blue in the upper right corner 2. include the bottom of the seed--this may not be possible, of course, with your original--but it would be desirable.

Nicely done. Good use of DOF to isolate the subject and good focus.

A shame the bottom of the seed thingy is out of frame, it would look nice towards the top of the photo. Nice focus and DOF though

So beautiful.
I think it could improve a little if there was a little space under the seed to make it look completely floating in the air. But still a nice take on the challenge. 8

Excellent bokeh, sharpness, detail, and very clean processing. I think this fits the challenge well and the only thing I would change is to place the subject a bit higher in the composition to really give that sense of free floating 'driftin'. 8

I know you would have gotten a few comments that said this, but this would have been even better if the seed wasn't cut off on the bottome of the frame, still very nice.

I like the bokeh effect.

I love the blurred backround here, the deep dark and light spots really give you the sense of how small the drifting flower is

Very cool, especially against that background.

Good capture, but I don't like the placement of the seed on the edge of the photo.

looks like it is stuck to the frame of the picture rather than drifting. Interesting concept, better exicuited with a different crop perhhaps?

The background seems odd. I would say "show the whole thing" but i'm assumeing thats where your holding it. Good detail

More centered would have improved the image IMO

Nice capture. could also be a negative space shot.

Somehow I want the seed to be higher and free. It feels artificially stuck to the bottom of the frame

Seems like we have several "flower pictures", but I like this one a lot because it is so dainty. Actually looks more like a seed to me than a flower. It's brightness against the darker OOF background is nice. My only problem with this image is that my eye seems to be drawn to the lighter portions on the other side of the image. Other than that, very nicely done. <7>
