Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Moods (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
Location: Club Soda, Montreal, Qc
Date: Apr 25, 2005
Aperture: f 5.0
ISO: 3200
Shutter: 1/13 sec
Galleries: Performance, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Apr 30, 2005

Taken during my friend DENIS DUCHARME's album launch where I was asked to photograph the show. After this I can really appreciate why you need faster glass in order to shoot this kind of stuff. Shot using my 28-135 IS (@70mm)and 20D pushed to the max at ISO 3200! Still only managed to get 1/13th of a second shutter speed. Good thing for the IS and that the bass player was standing still. I realized that my lenses were not fast enough, so I had to wait for people to be standing still most of the time. Still managed to get about 70 usable shots. The rest can be found here.

Processed in RAW to JPEG. In colour this shot is actually red in tint, from the overhead spotlights.

In PS7:
- cloned out an annoying lamp hanging over the cables hung up in the BG.
- cropped to 4/3
- saturated using colorize to get slight blue tint
- resize
- USM for sharpness on new layer
- removed USM over bass stings to eliminate "jaggies"
- save for web

Great duotone mood in this photo. A top entry.

I like the overall shot. Nice enough lighting, except for the slight flare around the head. I feel the shadow on the bass body is a bit of a distraction, and a more lit face would be more effective. 6 but bumping to 8 on second pass, after finding myself liking this a lot more than 6.

I get it, he's blue... Probably playing the blues... Lonely musician... Good work! :-)

a little soft of the model. Nice idea.

very nicely done ... subject, monotone, and composition all very strong WRT to "Moods".
may have like to have seen a little less light/clarity on the amp cords to better isolate man and his guitar

Poor musician. I bet he's sad because he's balding.

Nothing is in focus. Composition is spoilt by headstock's juxtaposition with cables. Good mood though.

this is a great capture. did you try to bring his face out just a little bit more? he's kind of dominated by the cables on the right (which are great, by the way -- really set the backstage scene)

IMO, I don't get "blue", I get contemplative before a performance. I like it though. Could be a little more in focus on his face.
