Focus is extremely soft in this image, making it hard to really focus on the sand.

Even if it's in soft focus, it must be in focus. This one sadly isn't.

this image would be stronger if the lighting and focus was improved... my eyes are drawn to the grasses on the left instead of the gritty textures of the ground

For me there is not a strong focal point in this photo. Maybe that could be helped if it was in better focus.

Needs a point of sharper focus to center the eye.

This needs an object of interest, and more focus. I see what you are shooting but it's not clear or sharp. Maybe a tripod or place the camera on a chair to steady it.
