The northern lobster is nocturnal and prefers to live in crevices during the daytime. I went for a dive on Easter Monday and found this guy wandering around in the open. Used only available light, as I didn't bother bringing my strobe with me that day.

Some lobster tidbits: The heavier pincer is used from crushing the prey. The lighter pincer is used for tearing or cutting the food. Larger individuals are able to migrate hundreds of miles in a season.

Native Americans used the plentiful crustaceans as fertilizer and the early colonists considered them food for the poor!! Boy, have times changed!!!

Lots of comments about the "weird color" makes me wonder whether people realize that lobsters are greenish before they're cooked!! They turn red once they hit the boiling water.

The visibility was only about 8 feet on this dive, so there was a lot of particulate in the water that did alter the color, but it is a pretty good estimation of what the little guy looked like underwater - what I attempt in post-processing - not what he would have looked like crawling around on the beach.

The Northern Lobster is simply the name given to this species - another name is "American Lobster" but this guy was definitely a Canadian lobster (actually heard him say "eh")!! I laughed at the southern lobster comment (accent?) - but in all reality, you can tell the southern ones because they don't have large front pincers - just a couple more weeny little legs - and they're called "Spiny Lobsters."

This guy didn't attack me or the camera, but it has happened before - my dive buddy once poked at a lobster and the lobster took it out on me when I was shooting a video clip (it ended with the lobster flying at the camera). Another time, while taking a photo of a moonsnail, a lobster attached itself to my butt!! Pinched right through 7mm of neoprene and left a scratch where I sit!! OUCH!!! Sad thing is... we can't take them from the ocean ... it's illegal here!!!

Nice fish-eye view. The reds and yellows in his claws make it fun. The claws look like cartoon characters.

I dunno. The color looks a little off.... This shot probably took more work than any other in the challenge! Nice framing. Hope he didn't try to crack open your camera case! "Grandma, what big CLAWS you have!"

Wow, a true underwater shot! (or at least a good replica!) The washed out light really makes this seem like the ocean floor. Can't wait to see where/ how you took this.

A very tasty shot. I like the angle of the crustacean too.

There's something wrong with the color. Probably because the animal is underwater. If you'd tweaked it a little in post-processing, i think this would make a great one.
