There was no question I was going to enter this shot. The original is a fantastic photo and the best close-up of a bird I've taken to date. This is a juvenile rainbow lorikeet that comes for breakfast with it's parents and sibling everyday. I found this image striking - hope you do to ! Have a feeling though I won't be able to compete with those fancy detachable macro lenses !

Editing:
Big crop
resize for DP
Adj levels
Adj curves
Bumped up saturation a little (blue)
cloned tiny imperfections
very minor dodge/burn
NO Sharpening as is

That's cool to know this piece of information regarding this wonderful image. I was on vacation when the results of this challenge came in and never really went thru the results in depth upon return.

This is a gorgeous photo! Well composed, great detail and color. The only nitpik I have is the reflection on the eye. It is what it is, but perhaps it could be played with a bit to remove the trees, or maybe some other approach entirely with cloning, etc...? One other thing, have you tried boosting the contrast just a tiny bit? My work monitor is not the best to judge photos with, so please bear with me if I'm way off base.

Surprised you don't have this up as a print. Again, well done!

Smile and keep having fun! ;^)

In response to rscorp, this shot was not telephoto, I was up close and personal with this little one. It is a juvenile and so docile that I literally had the lens in its face and it didn't mind. The parents have been coming around for some time and bring their babies every year !

Amazing, 6.6 and not even top 20... Heckuva shot. I'd like to have seen it higher.

Great colours and composition. the eye is a bit soft and could have done without the reflection but otherwise wonderful. 9

That kind of bluepurple is my favorite color. Good composition, there is a good flow and direction in the image. I don't like the eye however. The reflection breaks it in two and it would have more imapact with some light in it.

Something about the light in the eye, maybe a little less, but otherwise I think this is a great picture, I like the details of the feathers.

I really love the colors and texture in this shot. If the reflection wasn't in the top of the eye it would be perfect.

Nicely done. How in God's name did you get so close? Unless this is a crop from a huge telephoto. Either way, really cool crop, color and idea.

Minimalism, leading lines, birds, macros. This can virtually work for any challenge! Great stuff.

Fantastic shot! Beautiful colors, DOF, crop. Love the way the feathers fan out from the focus on the eye. Really nice job.
