From the Critique Club
Hi, Paige,
First impression: From the title I thought you meant the little Barbie in the top right corner was trying to hitch a ride? It looks like a setup (but I read your note that it isn't). It's really neat how you "caught a moment" in this picture.
Composition: B/W is a good choice. The picture is put together quite nicely. I very much like the inclusion of the sidewalk line (the diagonal line); it adds movement to the picture. The thin black border complements the picture well. The grease spots are somewhat distracting. I'm wondering about the choice of running the left handlebar into the top left corner of the picture - makes my eyes go away rather than into the picture. Maybe a slightly different crop? Something to try.
Focus: Very good, with the exception of the Barbie doll - she is slightly out of focus, and, during the challenge, I remember thinking, "If she is hitching the ride, she should be in focus".
Lighting: Very good. The star on the shiny handlebar is beautiful, my favourite part of the picture. I wish Barbie wouldn't have such a prominent shadow though.
Challenge: No problem meeting the challenge.
I've been looking at the other photos in your portfolio - you take some excellent pictures, I especially like your B/W work. This picture's a good addition to that. Is your little girl (she's beautiful!) getting tired of having her picture taken (my kids are)?
Keep up the good work!

Thanks all, for your comments.
This was not set up, I came upon this scene in my yard, thought it conveyed kind of a discarded toy look, that is why I left the toy in.
My kids attention span is about nill and I could feel that in this photograph, guess you had to be there :).
Thanks again for all of your perspectives to help me see through others eyes. |

I really like the photo and how you used the lighting to create shininess on the handle bars of the bike. This creates a lot of interest for the photo. The one thing that bothers me about this pic is that the toy in the top right-hand corner of the photo takes away from the mood of the image. |

Good subject. Black and White works. I think a little lower angle would have made it less obscure. |

I like very much the geometrics in this one! The toy doll is an interesting detail and even when the pic is B/W the texture of the background gives a big senssation of the feeling in that day. |

Assuming this was a set up shot, I'd have moved the bike to a section of paving without any joins or grease spots. |

I fail to see what the doll lying there is all about. Excellent contrast and crisp photo, nice touch on the flair. I also like how the picture is broken into two halves by the steering wheel. - 7 |

I really like the take on the challenge and the angle at which you took this shot. I'm not sure that the forgotten toy adds anything to the subject. I would prefer that it had been left out. Beside that, the bike or trike is nicely framed in the picture, focus is good, and makes for a nice B&W. The way the handle bars are framed in the picture, add nice dimension. Good shot. Good luck in the challenge. |
