Symbolic of my Irish family ancestry. This are the roots of a 200 year old Bonsai tree found in the Chinese Gardens here in Singapore.
I love the fact that this Bonsai has been lovingly nurtured for 200 years, through a long line of craftsmen, and its roots reflect this love and care by almost forming a heart shape:)

Amber - I have to agree with the "post challenge" posts. In no way does this photo deserve less than a 4. In no way does it derserve less than a 5! That's just crazy! I took one look at it, and totally understood. For someone to actually write "roots and family don't tie", you'd think they'd get it as they were typing it!

Keep up the good work. I love to just stare at this photo, and think about the symbolism of it. I know I'm no "expert", but I know what I like what I like. :)

Kate,

I can't believe most of the comments below...it must be quite dull to go through life with no imagination or firm grasp of language for some of these people...some of these comments are just amazingly rude and make the commenter seem...well...just kinda dense...at least...AT LEAST open a dictionary people before you say something doesn't meet a challenge...then open your minds.

It is amazing how some people on this site, built around being creative, can have no sense of creativity at all. It might stem (no pun intended) from the fact that anyone today can get a good quality camera that will give them nice photos so they instantly think they are an expert.

Sorry you didn't do so well but don't let the closed minded people deter you, this shot has a history and meaning to you so it is great.

Sorry, I personally don´t really think this fits with the theme of this challenge, too bad since this would have been perfect for the texture challenge. Like the shot but I didn´t want to give it 5 because of the loose tie in with the theme, IMHO you shouldn´t have to rely on the title to connect a shot with the challenge.

Oh man, and then the textures challenge was announced. Nice processing. Can't exactly get my mind to accept this as a good representative for family. If it had even a small seedling growing somewhere in the scene, you would have gotten high marks from me.

I really like this picture but I'm having a hard time getting it to convey and idea of family.

Good metaphoric image/idea & good photograph. It's strange; as I look at these tangled roots I can just about see glimpses of people in there, or at least bits of people. Arms, torsos, etc. It's a very organic sort of image. Oh dear, no more whiskey for me tonight. 8

There is a lot to take in here but really nothing that captures my attention. Interesting take on the challenge.

hmmm...doesn't say family to me

What in this picture conveys Family? It is just a shot of roots. What conveys Celtic or being ancient? It is just a shot of roots. Could have been better focused. There also is no central point of view in the shot. I have no idea where to look - I just get lost.

the look quite Bohemian to me

Sorry, roots of a tree and "family" are not even related lol

OK I finally saw it

This is sooo off the wall that I am almost tempted to give it 10 for the cheek of it. But I won't.

It is such a tangled mess that the photo has no real subject. It also seems to be a bit over-exposed.

Interesting take. Reminds me too much of snakes, which I hate, but will not ding you for that. Nice contrast but not sure if the b/w was the right choice here. But I am no expert.

gnarly roots do not signify family to me - sorry. White balance needs to be adjusted here too

Very creative take on the challenge. The jumbled roots, however, are very "busy" and actually kind of unattractive. The overexposed areas do not help either.
