G'day from the Critique Club Martin.
First off, let me just say i "get" the photo, and the point you were making (and come on its a sports watch people!). DPC voters are not too pro thinking-outside-the-box. By no means should you quit thinking outside the box, but it is important to recognise that even the most techically perfect shot will not recieve the justice (in score) it deserves if it is a little left of mainstream thinking. Some people at DPC shoot for the voters, others (like me) are happy to be voted down and keep the creativity and originality flowing - which path you choose to take depends on what you want to "get out of" DPC. Neither is right or wrong. You have to be a little thicker skinned for the latter though ;)
I would like to say more about the aperture - but i like to know the EXIF information to do so. If you don't know how to get at your EXIF information, consider downloading Picasa, it is a small, and free image cataloguing program by google, you can click properties on the image in question and it will tell you the cameras aperture and shutter speed (among other things). This feature is probably available in whatever software you are using right now, if you have a look.
Looking at the image however, i would guess at about a f2.8 . Personally, i would have used something closer to a 6 or 7 so that the entire face of the watch and the weights were in focus. I could not tell that that was the bar of a dumbell until i read what it was in a comment - it is too out of focus for a weight-lifting ignorant to tell what it is, but close enough to the focal DOF that you sit there saying what the heck is that thing. At this aperture i would have preferd it not there at all, because i spent too much time wondering what it was and why you had included it in the composition.
I enjoy the lighting, and the composition is fairly soild (though would have 'made more sense' with a different aperture setting).
The post processing is perfect for this image, and i do believe it deserved higher than a 4.0 .
If you have an comments or questions, feel fre to PM me :)

Nice watch! What is the object on the left - it is very distracting.
Keep trying... |

I'm trying to see the connection with the challenge topic here. Maybe this is a sports watch though the description does say to catch the action and action does not appear to be portrayed here. Could be that it's too dark so some of the details have gone missing. |

1 - DMC - No discernible creativity or effort here for the challenge. Nothing 'sporty' about this at all. |

Nice pic of a watch, but if you didn't have time to enter, why bother. |

The cxhallenge called for a sports action shot. I see no sport or action in this shot. Nice watch though. |

great shot, but why did you enter it? |

A watch and barbells? This inspires and overwhelming "meh" from me, especially since you seem to be deliberately snubbing the challenge. |

I don't see that this meets the challenge. The face of the watch is crisp and clear, but it's hard to tell what's going on on the left side. |

Great photo but just doesn't match the challenge. |

Ahh, the proverbial watch face photo. |

I like the photo but I find my eye drawn to the handle on the left. I spent too much time trying to figure out what it was? |
