Thank you all for your comments. It was better in color, but this was by far the best photo I took all week. Patella, the nest is made of lichen, tree moss and spider webs, pretty much the same color as the fir needles, so in color, this shot is still difficult to pick out from the surroundings. As I really didn't want to disturb her too much (see the comment from heritcon in England), I couldn't play around with the shot too much. I had wind blowing the branch around, the camera held as far up and out as humanly possible and a nervous looking mother to contend with. Basically, shoot and run away. Patrick, not to be mean, but this is soooo much more of a rare find. Flying hummingbirds are "a dime a dozen". I have dozens myself. I am still working on the "perfect" shot, but just how many nesting hummingbirds have you seen in the wild? My second favorite shot of all time is of this same female, resting near our feeder. One of the few times I have seen a hummingbird not in flight. I had often wondered if they ever rested. Certainly not when they are eating. Unfortunately, my camera doesn't "do" black and white". It wasn't a feature I cared about. Sorry, B&W fans. And not to be a total whiner, but really 3 ones? |

I love the puzzle nest. Have u tried to put it together yet? |

A little busy, I'd focus more onthe bird in the nest rather than the surroundings. |

I can't think of the way I want to word this. The hummingbird and nest are very clearly visible in the picture, and yet they seem to get lost among all those pine needles. While I've tried very hard not to make comments like this, I wonder if the color of the hummingbird and nest would be enough of a difference from the needles to help set them apart. |

Appears a little overly sharp to me. |

In such a busy B+W shot the bird is almost lost in this. This is a tough shot to take so I give you lots of credit for capturing this. |

Color and better light would most likely make the hummingbird stand out from the busy surroundings. |

great catch! the bird is lost a bit in his background, but the subject matter gives this a good score. |

Nice -- my guess is more likely a long zoom than a calm hummingbird... |

That must have been a hard shot to get!!! Wow |

I think this would have worked better in colour - as it is the light surround to the bird is distracting - it takes a moment to find the subject |

Tough subject. Nice job. I wish the contrast was a little better. |

oh wow, I am so jealous. This looks like it should be in an encyclopedia. If I could change anything it would be to brighten his little head up so you could differenciate(SP?) his head with the nest a bit better. great job. |

beautiful shot probably in color, but it loses the effect when changed to black and white. |

took the image and put it on PS Elements>Auto levels. Slightly darkened the image and improved what I think is a really nice photo. Just a little too light, I think.(7) |

In England that photo would be a crime without a special permit. |

The b/w conversion here makes everything camoflauged and the bird gets lots in all the confusion of the branches. |

Very nice I've never seen a hummingbird when it was not in flight. |

WOW ! How rare this type of photo is ! At *first* glance I thought wow this is pretty busy. However, I gave this a second look this morning as it was late last night when I looked at it. I must say...not only was this a hard subject to capture but the crop is perfect ! It frames it so well. This is a 8 from me. |

Very interesting capture! I like the concept here but I don't believe the overall image works well in black and white, but it is a great capture! the many sharp contrasts in this photo make it a little tedious in black and white... |
