... But I call him Noah, my son! I got lucky to capture a really serious face while he was wearing his sunglasses. Would you believe he is only 4 years old ... just started Junior Kindergarten. We were on our way home from getting haircuts and the orange in his hair came from the barber.

This was shot on a day with a very thin layer of cloud over the sun ... nothing harsh but good light. Tripod mount.

Photoshop processing:
- Converted from Canon RAW in Photoshop CS.
- Cloned out a small reflection from the right lense of the sunglasses.
- Create a Curves Adjustment Layer and applied a strong "S" curve.
- Dodging and burning to try and put the emphasis on Noah's face. (First time I've really used Dodging and Burning to any extent).
- Resize, applied USM and added a small black border.
- Applied strong curves adjustment layer

CRITIQUE CLUB!

the composition and color in this shot really rock. the focus is also very good, although it seems a bit far back (the ears are sharp, but the lips and nose seem kind of soft).

suggestions for improvement include:

- removing that green plant. it's the only part of the background that's in color and it draws the eyes away from the model.

- expose the kids eyes. although the sunglasses do convey "attitude," i think that many people feel that eyes are one of the more important aspects of a portrait. this shot removes that attribute from the mix.

- there seems to be a stray hair on his forehead that could easily be cloned out. that's minor, though.

overall, a great shot that really stands out. this is going to be a fun one for you to show his fiancee later on. :)

WHAT! Had you as an 8. I thought the idea of color portrait was to capture that certain something about a person. You did that beautifully. Great job.

A very "cool" portrait. The bit of leaves are somewhat distracting to me, especially since they contrast with his shirt. Otherwise, I like the chosen background.

I would have liked to see the eyes uncovered. Technically good though.

Oh and he does look tough too! I like the contrast of the boy with the rocks behind him. The sprouts of red hair on his head really add to the wonderful colors in this photograph. Best Wishes!

Cool porttrait, glasses and expression, somehow the background and the plant is not suitable and are distracting. The plant seems to contradict the "thrasher" theme

This has great potential. I'd put him up against a solid background and you'd really have something! Like the expression and the hair and glasses. HEE HEE Cute kid.
