Challenge: Liquid (Classic Editing)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S602Z
Location: McKinney, TX.

I saw this done in a book I was reading and thought it was an excellent challenge, that coupled with this challenge and we have a match.

This was done using my two strobe lights and guessing when the drop would hit the puddle. The trick is to have a small puddle of the liquid for the drop to fall into. I sure wish we could spot edit :-)

For those intersted, Dr Harold Edgerton, known simply as 'Doc' to his students at MIT, was the pioneer of this trick - indeed his 'Milk Drop Coronet' is perhaps his most famous image, and prints of it sell for phenomenal sums. This is perhaps better than his shot - but then the poor guy was shooting in the 1940's (I think), with his own new invention, the strobe flash: we now, of course, have the good fortune to be able to see our shots straight away, and select the best. Worth checking out his work, if you get the chance.

Oooh, you should try harder to get the print the same colors as this one ... at least you were able to clean up the tiniest droplets! Great shot.

gowf, go in the Q+A forum and read the first thread in there. I posted such a quick and dirty guide.

I enjoy your work, you truly have artist's eye. You wouldn't happen to have a quick
and dirty guide on border creating would you? People seem to like containment in
photographs and your border's do this well. I can color correct in PS but as far as
bells and whistles I'm clueless.

Thanks, Gowf67

best of the week, what a perfect crown. I like choice of the royal purple too, ties in with your theme. There is a little bit of softness at the tips of some of the drop/splashes, but nothing to cry about. 10

Superb image. Tied for my pick of the week. I am looking forward to hear how you were able to create this image. How did you synchronize the triggering of the camera with the instant that the milk crown appeared? 10 Morgan

Fantastic splatter shot! I am interested to find out what sort of triggering you're using to catch this so nicely. Only nit I can pick is the very tiny droplets away from the main splatter-- they're just a bit distracting. --9

very cool pic. I will be checking back to see how you did it after the challenge is over. My only complaint is that it looks like you have a tiny bit of motion blur.... but that may be the effect you were after.... either way I'm giving it a 10.... good luck, Todd.

I really like the light and dark curves along the top. Nice composition. Near perfect capture (tiny bit soft on the focus maybe). I'd get rid of that bright white spot post challenge. The reflection is really cool too.

I'm kind of tired of the macro/stop action/splash images, but I have to give you a 10 anyway. This is a great shot and I especially like the milk and purple liquid. I would clone out the tiny splash droplets as they are distracting (I realize it was against the rules for spot editing, though).
Great example of this technique...

Congrats on your number 1 ribbon! lol
Seriously... I'll be amazed if this isn't number 1 this week. Shame you can't spot edit out the extra drops near the top. Beautiful purple. You could have used this photo for the next challenge and called it 'Chocolate Digest Weekly' or something... 10

Wow...
How did you create this color composition?
Milk under a thin layer of purple water?
  Photographer found comment helpful.
06/05/2003 02:15:04 AM
Hmm, well, my only real problem with this is it's been done so often that it's lost some of its interest to me. I like the choice of purple for your contrast. There's a kinda neat planetary thing going on here that may or may not be intentional, but does help a bit to counteract that "seen it" reaction.

Knew there'd the the requisite droplet in here somewhere (not that I know how to shoot one myself). I think what really makes this photo unique is the use of color. What a dramatic shade! In the land of allowable spot edits, the specks in the black band should probably go, but overall everything, even the reflection, is so precise and beautiful! Nice work!

This is what i was going to submitt, but I missed the dealine. I want to know how you achieved this. I have built a trigger for my flash. Did you use something like this, or was it trial and error. Nice job not including any more milk than was nessecary (no drops on the plate)! Excellent! 10

Very nice shot - inspired by Jacko's Blueberry Splash? I like the title - very clever, with the 'crown-like' splash. Lovely, rich colours too - the white sets off the purple very nicely. Is that also a reference to Dairy Milk chocolate?

Nice. I think with the tinier splashes edited out this would make a great advertising shot for Dairy Milk chocolate as they use the same purple colours and make a feature of the milk content.
