I took this photo before preparing for my other photo that I took afterwards (You can check my profile, "the agony of defeat") and I taped black construction paper onto my white card table, put a lamp next to my chess set and started shooting.

Someone will blame you for this being my picture. Its not bad, but you have too much background.

This board is hard to photograph. Trust me, I know. I do think though that the background is a bit distracting, and probably anyone who would be reading a chess magazine, would be confused as to why this king was just sitting in the middle of nowhere and no other pieces around.
Something I find quite distracting is the orangish light in the background toward the upper left.
Good focus on the king. Those frosted pieces are WAY difficult to get to look right, so going with the clear piece was a good choice.

Cool shot. I would like to have seen it done with better lighting. And something different... Maybe the King lying down? Dunno. Not bad. Oh.. and that light in the background is distracting.

Great composition and fitting title. I like the lighting and the slight blurriness of the other pieces.

I would like this better with a simple background, maybe black. The chair and room in the background makes it look "snapshoty", also we've seen a lot of chess shots on this site. I like the focus on the one peice and the gleam from the board.
