Thanks for the encouragement in these post-vote comments.
Paganini: i had to crop a bit because a Canon teleconverter can do only so much. Cropping should definitely be a no-no with a 10D ;) Looking to get a 10D in about 10 months and look forward to having real zoom lenses. |

Nice shot Journey, a really impressive feat considering it's from a G3 :) except for the "cropping" :)

Hey Journey, wow what a showing! Most other contests 6.8 wouldn've gotten you at least a red ribbon! Congrats, great shot! |

Thank you for the nice comments. The original image contains all the reflection and plenty of water above the heron's head. I had to make a compromise, however, which was to crop somewhat in order to retain the most clarity on the face and notably the eye. That was worth sacrificing some space for. Ideally, i would have been a little closer to the heron. I stood on a rock at the edge of the water. Had i taken one step forward both the tripod and i would have fallen into the bay!
I really love this guy and was delighted to encounter him very, very early on a Sunday morning. Actually, i feel a little proud of this image and that i was able to capture him . Several other pics i took of him will appear in my portfolio shortly. |

A bit more more above the head would have looked better. |

My one and only problem with this photo is that the birds head is where the title of the magazine would be. This might not be a problem, but in this case the birds head is small and it would be distracting to have the print there. |

Beautiful photo... but I'm afraid that text might go directly over this guys little head for a magazine cover. So in that respect I don't think you met the challenge. Also putting the border on it looks more like a framed photo than a magazine cover. The photo however is wonderful so your definitely getting points for that. Great catch here, and it doesn't look like you had to crop in too much either! Wonderful job photography wise. |

For some reason I feel that there is not enough light for my mood.
I would assume you live in Florida or some place that has this type of Wildlife. I think more of a reflector or a fill would be warrented here. I have similar shots and I do not like them. |

oooh... lovely - what if it had a bit more room so his head doesn't feel crowded and the head n the reflaction isn't cut offf? |
