Abby may be an old dog (eight years old this week) but she loves to learn new tricks. However, her favorite pastime is still playing 'fetch' with a tennis ball. So for her birthday, that's just what we did.

First of all does it meet the challenge? YES I like your nice light application of grain. It adds to the fact that she is an old dog (although 8 isn't that old for a small dog) and it looks like one of those pictures you would find on a greeting card!!

Now let's get specific...

Composition wise, you did a beautiful job... perfect use of rule of thirds with both the dog and the ball. You can almost see the tension between the two objects... it's kind of funny.

Really nice lighting... you found (or made) some nice lighting, and you don't have any blow out, and the face is so well exposed!!

The image itself is very well done... nice use of shallow depth of field... you've got the dog knowing it's her birthday dreaming about the ball... and the ball just right there... come on let's play!! I love it. Doing this in sepia made it kind of dreamy looking and fun.

Your focus on the face is just superb and her eyes seem almost alive... starying at you from the photo. I love the little fur on the ears that you can really see... The photo just has a dynamic to it... lik you could easily picture the dog jumping and and ready to play which is really nice.

I love your use of sepia... I think it's really great...

Overall I think that this is a beautiful picture, that you will probably cherish for some time to come. I feel you didn't do aw well as you deserved to in the challenge because you didn't have enough grain for some people to see... I would suggest maybe offering this up to a stock image company... they might be interested. Good luck and nicely done!!

What a great picture! I love the ball int he background and the expression on the dog's face. "wanna go out?"

I would have liked a little more grain here. But this is nice and I can see it. Im just really wanting some grit in this challenge. The photo itself is really good. Gotta love a good dog portrait.

I don't really get it, and there isn't much grain, but that's a cute picture regardless.

7 - This is a great shot, but for this Challenge I can see very little 'grain', but can see how you have used it for effect here, but to me (and could be wrong) seems it is the 'toning' which adds the most impact here. Criticism; not much as, as you know, I really like this, maybe the dog's nose sharper, some whiskers showing, but then that may take away from the 'softness' on the upper face/head and ears. Like the ball(?) in the background, adds a good element and even more character. Just wish this had heavier grain for the Challenge, especially 'around' the dog.

What a brilliant pet portrait. I love the out of focus ball on the left side and the expression of the dog. IMHO, it could be even grainier... well done!

Grain is hardly visible and surely not essential here in otherwise very nice picture.

Yes, I'd like it (the dog)for my birthday, please!

I am in love with this photo, one of only two 10's given out by me in this challenge, good luck, I hope a ribbon comes your way.

A Jack! How on earth did you get him to stay still for even 1/20 of a second? And to ignore the ball?
This is a great shot. Love the tones and focus (though without the neck it looks a bit unnatural).

Where is the image grain?
