Challenge: Image Grain (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Pentax *ist DS
Lens: Sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC for Pentax
Location: Japan, by a road
Date: Oct 19, 2005
Aperture: f5.6
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 1/1000
Galleries: Animals, Floral
Date Uploaded: Oct 19, 2005

A bee hoverfly approaching a small thistle flower, where other bees were hanging out. Virtually unsized crop of the image that included the other bees hoverflies and the flower - I just liked how this bee hoverfly was on the bright spot.

I think you did great; it has an edgy, hyper-real immediacy to it. I think this should have scored higher int he challenge, myself.

A really good photo, that would be even better without the grain (I know, what can you do...)

Nice capture, but, I'm not sure that the addition of grain to this sort of shot improves it

I wondered if some fool would try get us to swallow an insect macro with grain. Well, it turns out I'm the fool, because you've done it and it's terrific. The use of the grain effectively isolates the bug in his little round bubble of relative clarity, and the result is a very clever (and legitimate) fresh take on the idea of an insect macro. Great job! 7

The overall effect is nice, although the grain does not ad as much as the rest of the process that gave this picture its earthy tonality. The only change I would make is t ensure that the grain was the same colour as its surrounding environment. That is the problem of digital grain that is not present in film grain.

Nice background, really makes your subject pop.

Yes - it is a hoverfly - but a nice capture anyway. The grain here is not particularly important, but it looks OK.

Nice capture. The grain seems to distort the picture and make it look out of focus instead of adding to it.

How cool is that!
