********Hi there Mike and greetings from the "Critique Club"********
The first thing that imediately came to mind when I first saw this was Texas, rodeos...then Georgia O'Keefe was a close third.
6.0585...pretty nice score you got for this one. For me...I would actually like to see this without the grain or the sepia...but alas this was the "grain" challenge : } The image does have a slight "vintage" feel about, though old photographs tended to have absolutely no grain at all or that much sepia toning. What the grain does do nicely for this image is enhance the "gritty-ness"...I can feel that dust in my teeth, feel it hitting my dirty dryed out face...The image does lack a bit of clarity, perhaps due to the slightly longer exposure, and on my monitor it seems a bit flat, like it needs just a slight levels adjustment to give a little more punch. And personally, I think it would interesting to see a different crop, I keep wanting to see more of what is going on around the skull, even if it is just more sand storm.
But enough about that...all in all this image was quite good in bringing about a "mood", which I really think was the main objective of this particular challenge. |

You have done an excellent job in capturing the feeling and purpose of grain in a picture. I like the sepia tone and subject matter for this challenge also. My pick for the blue ribbon. |

This is very powerful - it certainly does evoke the idea of a fallen captain. The hint of dust below the eye and lower horn adds to that effect; as if the animal has just now fallen and is still sliding to a halt - absurd of course, given that it's a long-dead skull, but the feeling is there nonetheless. The grain is of course entirely appropriate and contributes to the impact. 9 |

This is one of my favorites for the challenge. I love the feeling of the dust still settling around the skull. Subtle grain that adds texture and a feeling of grit to the shot. 10 |
