Hello from the Critique Club!
I have studied your image and have the following to offer:
Composition/perspective - the ratio between subject and negative space in this image is nice. Placement of subject is well done - nice rule of thirds application. Head on and keeping it level is also good for this image. The focus is clear on your subject, but the negative space seems fuzzy.
Color - a very narrow palette in this shot. The brown has a very rich tonal quality and the grain in the wood helps to keep it from being bland. Again, it would be stronger if in better focus on the negative space. The lantern itself doesn't have much to help it stand out against the background other than the flame. It would have been nice to see the dark base and tarnished top more pronounced against the background. Would have added a nice element of contrast.
Lighting - I think this is one element where this image fell short in the challenge. It seems the only source of light in the shot is the flame itself. This makes the whole image dark. Perhaps a bounced light of a soft quality off the background would have helped this. It also would have enhanced the quality of transparency. Although you can see the color through the glass, there is no definition. Again, a bounced light would have helped to bring this out.
Challenge requirements - due to the darkness of the image (see above) and the fact that there really is not any defined element behind the glass, the transparency only goes so far as the flame. I don't think this is strong enough to carry the image by itself. More depth would definitely have made this a much stronger entry.
Overall/my opinion - this is a good idea and would have worked much better with different lighting. You demonstrated good control of the low light and reflection of the flame in the glass. A slightly taller flame would also have worked. |

Returning for comments:
very nice low key coloration to evoke the magic of the lantern. |

It's rather boring, dim, and lacks contrast. I understand the moody, old time look you were going for, but honestly, it's a picture of a lamp. Not all that exciting. :( Perhaps a different background and some additional props would have made a more interesting study. |

I think you tried something very difficult here. I'm guessing by the low light of the photo, you were tring to get a sharp focus on the flame, as that is really the only element of the photo that is seen through the transparency of the glass. The low light of he photo has made it look like the photo is blurry. JMO |

the eye really gets drawn to the glass, flame, and reflection. i like the warmth of this image, but it appears to be a bit fuzzy to me. |

A blurry, average image. try incorporating some element that peaks the viewer's interest more next time... |

Perhaps a little too dark for my taste. Some of the reflections on the glass surface seem to detract from the simplicity of the shot. |

Not too exciting to me personally though it's a neat image and well composed |

I think you have a good idea, but the shot appears somewhat blurry on my screen. For me, this photo would hold more interest if there was a related object (or two) near the lamp and a bit more focus overall. |

Composition looks okay, but this is very dark. Although photographing a flame can be a challenge in itself! |

This is very dark on my screen and there seems to be some other ambient light. It's also on a slight lean which doesn't help. I like the warmth of the shot, however - good luck! |
