Challenge: Black on Black (Classic Editing*)
Camera: Nikon Coolpix 995
Location: Somers, Montana
Date: Jun 17, 2003
Aperture: f3.0
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/30
Galleries: Still Life, Studio
Date Uploaded: Jun 17, 2003

Black velvet background, windowlight from the right, shutter priority 1/30, dodged and burned to make smoke "pop" a little.

After submitting first my image, I decided to take advantage of the "post shot adjustmet" rule being discontinued in this challenge and submitted another version in which I used the smudge tool to remove some pixelization in the smoke.

Jodie,

Nicely done. Good job with the editing tools.

I'm not really sure I'd call this black on black - but there seems to be some confusion about the challenge anyway. I like the smoke against the blackness (where have I seen that before? lol) You've captured some delicate yet well defined wisps. I might crop in a bit.

I really like this photo. I would rather not see the incense stick and just take it from the smoke and the familiar looking pattern. 7

Love this; one of my top rated, though I admit I wish it was black and white, but honestly don't know if that would have worked better or not. Composition is OK, but it's actually the look of the smoke and the lighting on it, that really makes this shot for me.

INcense is often burned in sacred contexts, and your photo evokes this, I feel. Nice work.

this is a nice shot. the tones and textures of the smoke are really cool. i'm not so sure about the placement of the incense stick, jutting into the photo in the corner like that, but the smoke really makes it. lighting and focus are very nice. good job. 7.
