This is one of those last-minute entries. I don't have a lot of hope for it and was reluctant to enter it as I'm sure it will drag my 5.6 average down. In the end I spent so much time going out to get it - here it is.

The power substation that drives the lower half of the Nth Island of New Zealand is not far from us (and right next door where they built the castle for The Two Towers). At night it glows with the bright orange sodium lights. The lattice work and the transformers make incredible orange geometric patterns in the night from a distance and I was determined to capture them.

Problem - this place is locked down tight. Anywhere near it is masked by trees and/or fences. When we generally see it is from a motorway a kilometer away. I spent 3 hrs climbing through bush and falling down banks in the rain trying to find a gap. In the end this was the only place I could get close and the chainlink fence obscured even that shot.

I got rid of the fence, here is the shot before edit

Ok, the secret of geting rid of the fence is that I had an 8 sec exposure I simply grabbed the fence and kept it moving in and out for the 8 secs - all gone.

Hi from the critique club!

This image fits the challenge well.

I love the grungy colour on the building; it matches its function, glowing in the night like a cottage fire.
There's a light on inside and I want to know who is in there and what they are doing.
The lattice work sits on top of the two eye-like windows like a quirky hat:)
I can imagine that from far away this strange, unnattractive building would look intriquing.
For me though, the tree at the bottom right keeps catching my eye and is distracting, but from your comments, it seems you had no choice about your point of view.
An interesting image, but not one with that 'wow' factor that we all strive fruitlessly for;)

but no Magic. Just a picture that's too dark to see what's there. I can't tell if this is sepiatone or just lit by a sunrise/sunset or incandescent lighting of a colorless scene.
