CRITIQUE CLUB CRITIQUE
by karmat

(Sorry I didn't get to this during the regular "critique" week, some things came up unexpectantly).

I simply love this and I suspect the parents/grandparents/guardians are looking forward to putting it on the wall. Though his head is centered, the body going out of the lower right really gives it a dynamic feeling and gives the eyes somewhere to go. The dof works well here to focus the attention on the boy, and not the background. I also like the bw, and I think the softness is okay, but do think it might be interesting if you have any with sharper focus.

I really can't think of anything I would recommend to make this better, as I think it is truly effective the way it is. Very nice work and best to you in future challenges.

Didn't vote on this challenge but just read all the comments about people liking or not liking the softness. I find this portrait very beautiful. Just love the light and composition is fine. It works well soft and it probably would work well if in slightly sharper focus. Now that's postvote you might consider editing out that white shape that hangs ominously above his head. Doesn't need to be black, a med to dark grey would work fine, too. You probably already considered that.

I'm debating whether or not I like his face just slightly out of focus. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and comment on his wonderful expression and on the excelllent composition!

Nice use of DOF. Good use of B&W.

Wonderful portrait! The softness you've created has boosted the charachter amazingly. It's not often I see portraits this good!

This shot is very clean and the dof is lovely. I like the choice of b&w here and this is a very handsome subject!

A lovely portrait and works excellently in black and white - the pattern of his T-shirt really helps in that. Love the light in his hair and the background works well for me. Focus feels a little soft on his face for me but I know many people prefer that for portraits - I tend not to myself.

Neat Image? It doesn't work on people's skin- makes it look plasticy. Good shot, excellent DoF, but the noise reduction hurt this shot. 8

Something about this is very unnatural. did you use neatimage? It seems sharp, but I don't think it is. The DOF is so shallow, I think you focused on his ear and the rest of his face got out of focus. If it were focused better, this would be an outstanding portrait.

Excellent portrait. Just a bit soft around the face though.

Yow, those eyes are piercing. I love the softness of this shot, and your choice of b/w. Great expression. Makes me miss my own baby brother.

I love this image as a portrait, and as 'portrait' or 'kids' or 'direct gaze' or some such topic, it could get a 9 or 10 from me. However, the topic isn't blatantly obvious as you look at it (other than 'boy', I suppose), without the title's explanation, so that detracts from it a bit for me in this competition (YMMV, IMHO, pant pant). 6.

This is a nice portait, the soft focus works well with this shot as does the depth of field, my only suggestion would be to have all of the subject in focus, the central part of the tshirt is out of focus. 9.

You've got one talented photo taking family there (your mum and dad must be proud). Maybe the focus is just a little too soft for my liking, but the DOF is excellent as is this capture. Well done !! You'll be looking back on this shot in years to come with great pride

Little too soft for my liking, focus appears to be on the ear/collar area.

Beautiful portrait except for the softness in his eyes, eyes need to be tack sharp. Also cropping a bit on the left to leave more room in front of him would help the composition.

I don't usually comment til the end of the week, if I have the time, but had to comment on this right away. This is absolutely one of my favorites this week! Great DOF, the black and white is perfect for it, your composition works so well, and his expression is wonderful! Some peeps will probably "slam" you for the soft focus, but that's what really makes this shot for me. Heck, I'd hang it on MY wall, and I don't even know the handsome young man! Great work! 10

I like this. I like the soft focus (many won't). I don't like the crop.......I see too much background (void). The light on the top is a little distracting. I do like this young-man. He is good with the camera, a great model for you. Intense gaze.....very good.

Nice portrait. Good lighting and tone. Bright patch top left is a distraction, but not sure how you could lose that without reshooting (or losing part of his head).
