Thanks to everyone who left comments, and MattO for the critique. I had several other shots with only one rider in it, and ones that were better in focus, but I chose this one - I think the people in the background help the theme of City Life, and the composition of this one was more like you'd see in a BMX photo by someone who knew what they were doing (not to say that I do) than the others.
The focus and lighting, what can I say.. inexperienced, first time I'd shot BMX photos. |

Hello and greetings from the Critique club. After spending some time viewing your photo I have some thoughts and suggestions. This is a nice stop action photo, with good colors and pretty good composition. Deciding if it met the challenge is a problem for some viewers. I think that city life for a lot of folks indicates large downtown metropolitan areas. However for myself living in a town of 6k thats not the case. I think you represent city life where you are rather well. Its well exposed and focus while not spot on, is pretty good.
On to things that could have improved the score. The composition is good but has some flaws. The 2 kids in the background distract from the main subject. The main subjects face is blocked by the right hand and handlebar. As I mentioned before focus is a little soft, but with a shot like that dead on focus is hard to achieve. Overall pretty well done. Good luck with future challenges. |

The two boys in the background seem to be out of place here, I think the image would have been stronger without them.....Distracts from the guy on his bike in the foreground. |

Seems a bit soft. Maybe an Unsharp Mask would have helped. |

Nice stop action shot! (Hope you didn't get landed upon during any takes.) Doesn't have as much of a "city" feel as I might like, but still a good entry. |

Great action shot - and the people in the background watching add to the shot... Looks less framed and more natural. Perhaps a title like "Carving up the street" would have been more appropriate for the subject? The colour is good but the shot feels just a little dark or something - looking at a dark subject against a bright background always feels difficult to me. |

Composition is ok. The subject matter could have been better. The image quality is ok. Has potential of being really creative. - 5 |

Cool action capture but this strikes me as more suburban than city. It could be sharper in focus. |

A shame his hand is in front of his face - but a great shot nonetheless! Well done! |
