 Photographer’s Notes

I shot around 6,000 pictures in 2005. That’s a lot for me, but not so many compared to the DPC crowd. I was able to narrow them down to 20 and then 5. I gave each my best Photoshop shot and got my wife to react to them. We both ranked the same photo as 5th. In the end, I had 4 that I was equally happy with, proud of as my best for the year. In the end, I picked the one I felt would score best here. This is going to be a huge challenge with a ton of fine photos by great photographers. It will take something dramatic to stand out, I think. Maybe this is dramatic enough.

This photo was taken in October in Xi’an China at a Tang Dynasty Cultural Show. It was hand held, with the lens wide open and at maximum ISO. It’s has more grain than I’d like but maybe not enough to hurt the photo. I couldn’t stop the movement of the dancers any other way. VR lens helped, too.

From the thumbnail, I was looking forward to seeing this in full size. Very dramatic, but I'm a little disappointed that the male dancers' feet are cut off. Ah well, them's the breaks.

Very colourful and vibrant, totally coincides with this kind of spectacular performance. Nicely captured and would make for a good billboard poster outside the theatre. Pity it looks pixel-y... like it was overly-sharpened or something.

Nice job for what looks like a difficult lihgting situation. With the light colored smoke in the background you could have easily lost the detail. I like the intensity in the face of the dancer holding up the female.

Love the colours and i like the capture here. I can see the potential for using the rule of thirds a little more in the cropping.
