Sorry- I thought that I could add the recipe later,,, oops.

8 egg yolks
1/3 cup granulated white sugar
2 cups heavy cream
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 cup granulated white sugar (for the caramelized tops)

Preheat oven to 300ºF. In a large bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is thick and pale yellow. Add cream and vanilla, and continue to whisk until well blended.

Divide mixture among 6 ramekins or custard cups. Place in a water bath and bake until set around the edges, but still loose in the center, about 50 to 60 minutes. Remove from oven and leave in the water bath until cooled. Chill for a while. To serve: sprinkle 2 teaspoons of sugar over each custard. Caramelize sugar with torch . Enjoy!

Best composition for the challenge in my opinion, an actual recipe! Nice elements, especially the flame, colors, arrangement, texture, DOF, and composition. Less background pattern, more saturation, and more sharpness would help. Tasty, and I hope that it takes a ribbon.

Well arranged and taken at a good angle. Including blue and red adds color interest to the image and the blowtorch is a fun addition. The Pyrex measuring cup, eggshell and strawberry appear in sharper focus than the rest of the image which implies that shooting at a higher f/stop for greater depth of field would work with this image. The checkered background is a bit of a distraction to the rest of the composition.

I think a tighter crop might have helped this picture. It's a good shot, but it could have been better.

Glad to see somebody knows how to create creme brulee the right way! :-) You gotta use a torch!!! Nice shot.

Good focus & composition. A flat background rather than the pattern black would have been better for the shot.

Part of this vote is my love of this dish. I would have prefered it without the strawberry, it doesn't add to the photo for me. And the flame is great, would have more impact without the hand.

would have been better if you have first cleaned the spilled sugar and left only a small pile with the spoon , it looks too messy that way.. personal opinion of course. just that the sugar's a little distracting, nice idea though:)

nice showing the making in action

Nice photo, lighter areas look a little contrasty/over exposed, but overall well done.

The messiness detracts. If you had the creme brulee, torch, and strawberry and got rid of the spilled sugar, milk and eggshell it would have been much more attractive. Also, you have overexposed (edge of creme brulee container, sugar in spoon, inside of eggshell.

mmmmm my favorite, creme brulee...can't wait for this competition to be over to get your recipe! Fabulous job on the photo, that is a realistic look at cooking in the kitchen with the spilled sugar. Well done!

my favourite dessert...but a messy photo has too many distractions IMHO
01/11/2006 03:30:32 AM
although the idea of burning the creme brulee is very good, that object ruins a very good picture.... crop it out. anyway, a 9 for the version without it (in my mind)

You're on the right track, but you need to neaten up your objects. The measuring cup looks like it needs washing, the spilled sugar looks messy, and the broken egg isn't terribly attractive. Maybe you could have had a couple more strawberries, whole eggs, and sugar in a small bowl or other container. I really like the red ramekin and the texture on top of the creme brulee.

This is my favorite food. Ever. Oh, and nice torch. :) Good use of "mess" with the sugar everywhere for a sense of "just finished".
