The lighting here is rather flat; more directional lighting from the side would have helped to add a lot of depth.

Hmmm... something about this doesn't quite work for me. The pen caps are nice and bright, but the color on paper is a bit more muted. That might be it. Trying to picture something similar - a blank image (from a coloring book, or something sketched?) and having the colorful pens lined up ready to go.
