**** Greeting from the Critique Club ****
Challenge
- Relevant to the Challenge? Yes
- Is subject unique (vs. unoriginal or rehashed)? Yes very creative.
Compostion
- Good or Bad? How can it be fixed? A several people mention compositionally it would be better if the Mermaid were looking into the frame and not out of the frame. Reposition the camera so the she is on the right side of the frame, the rock is in the middle of the frame and the sun is in the top left. The sun in the center tends to dominate, taking away from the Mermaid as the focus.
- Good use of Depth of Field? Yes
- Good focus? Yes
Lighting
- Good use of light? Unfortunately, the foreground lighting (or flash) is over the top, making the rock seem like it's glowing, hence the comments about the fake look. It almost looks like a studio shot, except you'd never get the halo of backlit hair (very nice) like this if it were studio.
Aesthetics/Artistic Appeal:
- Colors and Contrast The colors in the sky, water, and in the Mermaids 'scales' are excellent.
- What is my reaction or feelings? Very artistic. You have quite an interesting portfolio. I'm keeping my eye on you. ;) |

This looks too fake and digital-artsy to appeal to me in a photography contest. I think that in this context the fantasy would feel more fantastic if it were better grounded in something that looked real. I think that I'd be able to connect better with an element of fantasy that's surrounded by the everyday mundanity than one which is surrounded by an artificial looking scene. |

Very cool, but it would had been better if she was facing the opposite way. It would give a viewers perspective a bit more of an opportunity to imagine she was looking at something. I was always taught in photography that if your subject, such as one looking, is going to be offset, make sure they are looking into the depth of the photo, and not the outer edge. Just thought I might share that, but nice shot. |

Yay! One of the most obvious fantasies in the challenge, rendered in suitably fantastic colors. My only complaint is that the little mermaid is facing out of the scene rather than engaging the viewer or directing attention towards the sun. Still, this is one of the best entries IMO and nails the challenge right betwen the fins. Good job! 9 |

Positioning the sun a little farther to the right would have helped. The lighting on the rock is a little distracting since the lighting seems unbalanced with the rest of the shot. I assume you used a flash to prevent it from being in silouhete, but perhaps a little less flash power or at least some better post processing would help. |

Very cool! This is so creative. I wish there wasn't quite such a hot spot on the water, but the colors are amazing, and the concept is well worth overlooking that. Good luck. |

good idea but the pose isn't very interesting. she seems to be awkwardly placed. the flash at the bottom of the stone hurts the image. but i like the sun and the line it makes on the water and the colours. |
