The original idea came from a shot Lichfield took of Michael Caine in the 1960's. He looked really cool and fresh in it.

I couldn't pull it off with Dad, who was a wonderful subject. So I treated him like one of Lichfield's royalty. I think I could have done a lot better really. A little more contrast perhaps and better lighting. Anyhow...we live and learn.

Nice shot. You can sense a closeness between the subject and shooter. I'd love to pull together a collection of B&W father images... see comments in this image...

I like the look in your father's eyes. I think for this portrait to be even more effective, you could crop it tighter, less shoulder and just smack to his face. The black background is great and I like the use of BW in this image. I'm sure your father will be pleased with the results of your efforts. Great job!

Composition-wise, usually it's best to have the face in the right part of the frame, not the left.
