Was looking through the work of some of the old pros and came across Lee Friedlander.

Here is an excerpt from a site on the masters of photography:

"Lee Friedlander emerged in the early 1960s as a significant photographer of the contemporary American environment. His is a witty, multilayered vision which emphasizes the two-dimensional confines of the picture plane, challenging photography's formal conventions and making familiar objects and people enigmatic through near-surrealist juxtaposition. His images involving reflective and semi-transparent surfaces create playful ambiguities of space and meaning. The awkward, offhanded "snapshot" quality of his work disguises its considerable sophistication."

I came across a few candid shots he took of people smoking.

This is my tribute to him!

The little whisps of smoke make this image in my opinion. Excellent capture.

Wow, very nice capture of this man. I would suggest cropping a little off the top, and a fair bit (maybe 1/4 of the image) off the left (leaving a little space around his head, but cropping off a bunch of his shoulder), to frame his face more in the upper-left of the frame, for even more impact... and that's on a shot that I found pretty impactful to start with. :-)

Alas, the (lack of) cropping I'm finding to be more distracting than I'd like... With it, I think this image would be at least a 9, and maybe even a 10 for me. without it, I'm struggling... I want to give it an 8, because it's such a nice capture of a moment, but I find it just doesn't quite sit well with me, and so I think I'll have to give it a 7.

Looks like a nice candid. Too bad the quality is a bit poor, high ISO maybe? 7.

The image grain of this photo seems to compliment the emotion that is being shown here. I think the image in itself is great and the look in his eyes are wonderful. I would have probably had him not in the center but to the left of the frame to follow the ROTs. Great work. 6

Part of the fun of the challenge is comparing the photos to the work of the photographers they're paying tribute to. I can't figure out who that would be in this case. Still a worthy photo. The background is a bit noisy and the subject a bit sharp. You may have intended this look but it would not be my preference.
