Challenge: Broken II (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Location: San Antonio Tx
Date: Feb 6, 2006
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 100

Date Uploaded: Feb 6, 2006

One of San Antonio's homeless trying to stay warm during a cold breeze.

Again, I don't have a telephoto and I haven't reached the point where I can walk right up to a stranger and ask them if I can take their picture. I had to:

Crop
adjust levels and saturation to tone down everything but red.
Contrast.
Added noise (10% gaussian, monochrome) to give it more of a rugged look.

Wow! This is a powerful photo! Somehow, I thought I voted on all the pictures, but I missed this one. This would have been one of my favorites. Very well done!!

I love the ping-pong comments!

- Yes, she was really homeless
- Yes, I added the noise on purpose. The image was too bright without it.

there is way too much grain in this shot. I dont know if it was intentional or if it was a limitation of the camera you used but it is not helping your shot at all

Good subject & composition, the image seems a bit noisy however.

Excellent shot. Like the pale tones and grain

Very nice, the grainy effect makes the picture a little bit more dramatic. 8

I think you had a good concept but the picture is just bland. Not enough detail in the subject to show broken. Looks like noise was added to the picture and it makes it look flat.

Very grainy, but it does add to the harshness of the whole scene. I do like the open space of nothingness before her and the red hood being the only vibriant color (I don't think it would very interesting without it). Capturing her aligned with the dark column in the bkgrd adds to her solitude. Even the barren branches arched over her lend to the concept of no shelter/protection from the elements. Too bad you couldn't photoshop out the pole, it interupts her shadow and the space behind her and a different angle probably wouldn't have worked. Good job.

Just curious: Really homeless, or hired model? :)

I think it's a great shot, but I am not sure I like the graininess, it degrades the image...grain is great and would suit this shot, but not like this...but a great capture...I hope it does well for you

Nice entry for this challenge. Perhaps a bit too light for such a dark theme?

Very nice! Love the use of noise here, the red really brings out the subject. Good use of space and framing with the pipe and tree branch behind her.

I think it would have more of an effect if it was sharper and less granualted. Good midtones though!

this effect doesn't work

Excellent title. The grain enchances the photo given the nature of the emotional response the photo evokes. This is my favorite of the challenge. Hope it does really well for you. 10!

Whith out the title just another street scene, the grain effect has dramatised the image, and there is something that captures the heart strings...8

a very disturbing but too common image of our times - somehow the graininess of the imge adds to the potency

i like the noise and composition and hues used--i would have panned just a tiny tidbit to the left to minimize some wall space on right. Great image.

I like the graininess - symbolic of her rough life. The red scarf really makes it for me. Great use of negative space. 8
