 Shell on a mirror. Used a lazer pen to flick light across the outside f the shell, then used a small white/blue led torch to put the white back into the inside. The white/blue pen torch was again flicked into the cavities at close range. The 34 second exposure provided just enough time to work the shell with two light sources.

PS Work:

Rotate image and crop to get a better angle.
Gaussian blur then fade to smooth out the grain.
Selective Color to change the density and black content of the colors. Bring up the reds, and make the whites jump.
Hue/Sat to bring up the cyan and blue elements.
Levels to get the black and white points.
Sharpen using USM
Resize and save for web.

Not sure how you got that translucent look - but it is wonderful. Please let us know how this was done. A top rated image in my book - hope it does well.

I just love thi as an abstract, it's confusing, difficult even, to look at it in any other way.
