Its my favorite book, and its completely obscure - but everytime I go by this place I think of this scene...
The MidState Trail goes by the end of my driveway, and this spot is about a mile in towards the north. I hiked the rugrats out to the field with the "treehouse" (its actually a hunters stand) and chose this spot for the craggy and jagged boulders. This is Massachusetts and there are broken and very old stone walls everywhere marking old farmland boundaries through the forests, very much like some European countryside...
The book is about a haunted/magical/warped wood in England where old traditions are steeped in everyday life and a modern family in the middle of it- and a young girl named Tallis is captivated by, and eventually drawn into the forest in search of her brother. It revolves around Myth, the origins of Myth, Storytelling, the powers of Naming, love, the transcendance of love, fate and ones destiny as well as truth turned into story... it traces the Arthurian myth to its origins (through Tallis' journey to the center of the wood spanning many years). The only thing this photo is missing is the masks - through whos eyes Tallis sees the true nature of her surroundings...
Theres a ton of processing done here to bring out the stylized comic feel.
Crop
Curves
Unsharp mask
Hue Saturation
curves again
brightness/contrast to around 20
Burn edges to Vignete
dodge highlights
Gaussian Blur on Color Dodge Blend mode
Gaussian Blur on low to Multiply mode
Adjust Brightness/Contrast
Desaturate
Dodge and burn the rocks highlights
(Note: Its been pointed out to me by my Husband that this photo and its post-processing has a definate Joey Lawrence feel to it. I was aiming for a book illustration feel, but looking at it now I definately see similarity. So, humble apologies to Mr. Lawrence in advance.)

I like everything about this except for the weird eery 'things' in the stones in the forefront.
Could this be Where the Wild Things Are? Nice photograph however those stones continue to haunt me.
(That is not bad, mind you.)
THANKS...the explanation about the work is wonderful and explains the weird shapes in the rocks. I think this is more efffective if one knbows the story. Great.

Really like the dark edges on this one. Don't know the book or the author but the picture makes me want to check it out to see what the book is about. 9 |

I think the girl should be moved a bit to the left to get her right on the rule of thirds line. This shot is nice in some ways, but really fails to excite me. |

The dodging here is simply too strong. |

I do like this shot but not convinced by the vignetting nor the work around the subject, no right hand? and they look almost cut out. To me its overprocessed (and at my level). |

Wonderful image, I like the use of the burn tool to accentuate your subject. Good luck! |
