Another photo of my son. I had intentions of taking a portrait shot of a friends kid, but with it being Easter Weekend and all, life gets in the way.

I set out to try a high key image, with only on camera flash, Lowel Ego light and a reflector ... can't be done. Oh well, I'm submitting anyway despite my failure to do what I set out to do. Of course, this was the 2nd last shot before my son NEEDED to go to bed. I would have liked to have tried a different background.

::: Greetings from Critique Club :::

Hi, as requested, here is an indepth critique of your submission.

First Impression - the most important one:
Actually, a good attempt at the high-key look you were after. A bit of dodging on the right side of the bg, would have given it that white isolated look.

Composition:
I think I would have like it more if he were in the right side of the frame or if it weren't cropped as tightly.

Subject:
Clear and isolated from the background well

Technical (Color, focus, and light):
Color: well managed and natural.
Focus: sharp, although I think DoF is a bit shallow.
Light: I really like it. The light, considering what you are working with, is quite well managed.

To grow its vote?:
Perhaps a stronger composition and maybe something a bit more dramatic.

Summary:
Quite a lovely portrait of your son. Definitely a keeper (the photo and your son) :-) Keep up the good work.

Hope to see more from you soon,
Leroy

...too washed out and the horizontal format doesnt work---neither does the framing

Very nice! Simple and effective. Do find the left side of the photo just a tad too hot/bright.

captivating eyes! good lights.
cant really say I like the way the photo is cropped, especially the way his hair was cropped off - a little hanging in between.

There is a great deal of light on the left side which is saturating the photo. Apart from this great shot. 8

Love the DOF and your skin tones look perfect. THe centered composition works really well here, IMO. It suits his level gaze. 7 from me.
