She was riding a little train @ Bayside in Miami, but was bored because it was just going in a little circle. Had just gotten home from vacation the day of the entry and looked thru my shots, and this one stuck out.

PostChallenge comment:
The look on her face seemed shallow and lost and the colors of the train were so vibrant, so I decided to desat her. I named it "separated" and went with the angle of being lost in a "blah" colorless world, looking out in into a world of color. Didn't go over very well with the voters. Thanks for all the helpful comments...and yes...the white and red thing should have been cropped out.

::: Critique Club :::

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

Interesting to do a critique on your image but it is difficult if you don't give us any information in your photographers comments. When we do a critique, we go past just the photographic result, that's what voters comments do. The critique looks at what you were trying to achieve, how you wanted it to look and what issues you had in getting the image captured and ready for voting.

Now I don't think you had your one handed keyboard for this shot so can understand not entering comments .. but I know you got it now .. they really do help with critiquing.

First Impression - the most important one:
Interesting shot .. good framing .. nicely out of the box this one.

Composition:
This is a reasonable though not stunning composition .. this may be due to the selective desat impression ... not sure ...

Subject:
meets the challenge in spades.

Technical (Colour and light):
This is good natural light from the looks ... and I love the DOF ... I am biased on selective desat and think it does work in some cases but it seems a little overkill in this shot ...

To grow its vote?:
I would have loved to have seen this in colour to see how that works ... this I think would make a huge difference to the shot.

Summary:
Good shooting .. you are overall improving all the time ...

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via the PM system.

Cheers

Kari

Sorry but the selective desat is something that I strongly dislike except for a few isolated cases, I would have liked this so much better if it were either all in color or in b/w. Nice expression on the girl and good DOF though.

Good selective desat. Wishing the white thing on the left was in the frame.

Interesting and well done. I think it would be more forceful if the girl was in color and the "frame" de-saturated. Intesting still.

Really nice toning treatment and composition. I think that I might have tried shooting throught he window on her left as the bell and white structure in the foreground are distracting. Very well done with the selective BW, though.

I'm not really a fan of the desaturation here, I'm not sure how it helps the photo.

Great use of selective desat, fingures look a little funny. Nice photo.

I enjoy your use of black and white framed by color. the cut off object on the left hand side is a bit distracting. i would have chosen a closer crop. otherwise great photo.

I love the contrast between the vivid colours outside and the B/W hues tones that you treated the little girl with . Wonderful. Love her natural and candid expression too. Great!

would like to see her face lighter...and her fingers are glowing purple!

nice expression. There is some weird color artifacts, mostly visible around her fingers.

strange blueish tinge to fingertips, otherwise quite good.

if you use selective color, you have to be very careful selecting the subject. I don;t think it works well with your photo. I can also see her fingers are a bit uncarefully edited.
