A perfect iris bloom from our yard, just after a rain.

Converted from RAW, USM, crop, levels, brightness/contrast, hue/saturation, resize, crop, save for web.

Comments after the challenge:

Thanks to everyone for the comments, good and bad. As to the water drops, it had been raining for weeks in my area, so it was either shoot w/ the drops on there or spend an hour drying all of them off w/ a q-tip. I liked the drops, so I left them.

Yes, flowers are a cliche around here, but I actually thought of this one as soon as I saw the challenge as our irises had just opened. I had to wait awhile for them to open more fully before I shot it. I also took probably 50 different shots of them, from different angles, distances, flash/no-flash, etc. I did spend a lot of time trying different things and attempting something interesting and creative with it.

This close crop and no-flash shot worked the best out of the ones that I took. I see what some mean by the close crop feeling too tight, but I was trying to take out some of the "it looks like a flower" feeling to it and make it a little more about interesting colors and shapes.

::: Critique Club :::

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

First Impression - the most important one:
Lovely ... flowers normally score well .. so this is a good solid and safe shot.

Composition:
I am not a huge fac of centering an item in the picture ... I like to think about the rule of thirds //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thirds and also leading lines .. something that can take you further into the picture to explore. This is not to say that you composition does not work .. cos it does.

Subject:
Meets the challenge ... and does it well.

Technical (Colour and light):
Lovely .. I think what you have here is good, sharp with a good DOF.

To grow its vote?:
Play some more and think about how to get the "wow" factor into the shot.

Summary:
Well done ... you are doing great .. can't wait to see more.

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via the PM system.

Cheers

Kari

This is a gorgeous shot. The color is so vivid and the dew drops really add a lot to the image. I don't think this could have been any better.

The colors are very vibrant and the water drops add some texture. It's just cropped a little to much for me.

A little too tight a crop for my taste and needs more light to make the colors pop. 6

Nice -- very though subject since it has so much depth in the frame. Just a hair out of focus and the yellow seems too saturated. 6

Beautiful flower. A bit of a cliche but beautiful nonetheless. 7

good shot
nice one

5 - Nice, but would like to have seen some of the yellow in focus as well, perhaps a slightly different angle to showcase the two, not sure. Difficult, but also 'less green'. A slight variation in composition - more off-centered, or otherwise more centered, may have also given this a little extra, not sure. Looks like you tweaked the colors to get the hue right for the Challenge, if so, seems quite well done.
