Greetings from the Critique Club...

Hi, Crystal. This is going to make me hungry now. :P

As far as the challenge is concern this one hits it square on. I think that helps and also hurts you. In other words, it's a safe subject which is good in that you minimize low votes but you may also sacrifice some high votes who are wanting to be more wowed by the subject.

In terms of the image itself, it's good. I like the sharpness and it's full of color. What I think worked to your disadvantage was the shallow DOF and the composition. I don't really see a reason why the entire plate and fork wasn't in focus. Had everything been in focus I believe the cake would still stand out pretty well.

As far as the composition is concern it just feels a bit awkward, IMO. A square crop would have probably worked better or at least provide more space at the top.

Well that's it. Looks like you're fairly new to DPC so let me take this time to welcome you to the site. Good luck in the future and I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Edited for spelling.

I really love the sharp contrast between the plate and what it is sitting on. I think it helps to lead the viewers eye towards the cake. I actually voted high on this picture and though it would do much better.

Nice subject and good styling. The dribbles around the cake (the small ones) are a little distracting from the cake and overall crispness of the composition. I might have wanted a little bit sharper focus on the cake itself.

Very nice color scheme and a good setup for this challenge. I do find that food shots work best with either very shallow or very deep DOF, but this is still a really excellent image regardless. Very nicely done.
