it's a great idea, and you've gotten some good tips. these shots are difficult because there is so little that you can control (well, short of dropping stuff to make cars swerve).
you have to close your eyes and imagine what you're after, set it up shoot, then examine and make adjustments. if you aren't feeling 'wow', then go look somewhere else.
one of the keys to making this shot is the capturing the dynamics. here are a couple (although mine is nowhere near as good as mark's shot).

Hey Scott-
I think this was a missed opportunity. Night photography almost always has that "magic hour" which is typically an hour just before or after sunset. I think you just missed it. The foreground and background is black with hardly any definition to them. A silhouette almost always never scores high here for a night shot unless there are other things in the composition that leads the eye throughout the photo. The sky is too flat with no visual interest. Maybe if there was more ambient lighting this would have done better (more cars on the road, street lamps, etc).
It's a good shot technicaly except for the sensor dust or maybe filter dust spots that are faintly seen in the upper left hand of the skies. Don't fret dude. I would reshoot this type of image and post it for critique sometime ;)
Cheers,
Rikki |

I feel like you tampered with curves a bit too much, but I could be wrong... |

Good idea, wrong time of day to take this photo if you want my opinion. What I mean is that you have no texture to the dark ground around the freeway and that freeway itself isn´t enough to carry the picture. I would suggest you being there an hour or half an hour earlier to be able to catch some texture in the dark areas of this photo.
The composition is good, nothing wrong with that department. |

You picked a good time to shoot with still some colour in the sky but the main problem is there is not enough going on. No streetlights and not many cars. |

I'm surprised this didn't do better. I guess people are sick of night-time slow-shutter headlight shots, but this was executed very well. You got a 7 from me. |

well, I'll give you my non-expert opinion also... I agree that there's not much "wow" factor or story with the photo and I also think that more detail in the foilage would help, or some sort of subject, beside the lights, to focus on. I'm not sure with the editing rules, but if there were some way to have more of a gradient to the sky, that would look nice. Other than that, I really like the photo, it has a nice clean look to it and the colors look great to me. I personally like more "abstract" type art, but I've noticed that those sorts of photos don't do as well with the DPC community. |

For what it's worth I gave it a 7 . I liked it. Perhaps one way to improve would be to have more detail in the foliage on the side might of helped-who knows. Keep on trying and one day you will hit the jackpot (",) |

Technical flaws that I think hurt your score: the color of the sky is artificial - too much cyan from what I am seeing. Several sensor dust spots can be seen in the sky. The tree line has haloing indication over sharpening done in post-processing. Ona positive note - composition was executed well.
There isn't a subject of strong interest, thus no WOW factor. Most people like to see a story being told by an image. There is no story here.
I think a 5.5 was a pretty fair score on this image. Whiule the colors of the lights down the road are striking, there are too many other improvements that could have been made to score this higher. |

Found subject to be uninteresting, though your leading lines give it some strength. They aren't leading anywhere, though, so when you use that as a compositional technique you need to have a point of reference where the lines are leading the eye. |

It is lovely in a way, but I miss something to focus on here, some centerpoint. |

not enough interest in the photo. I'd prefer to see more of the road itself, like the one on the right side. 7 |

Wow, The absolute blackness of the landscape really makes the light streaks very ghost like and mysterious. This photo is almost graphic art like, but still photorealistic at the same time. Way cool! |

I like the abstract quality of this and the use of light. Well done. |
