Bear Music's Landscape instruction thread got me thinking about light. I had accidentally taken a photo very similar to this one several months ago, but lost it in a hard drive crash. Robert's lessons on the different types of light reminded me of how much I loved this sunset shot of the old State Theater.

It is a building with a lot of history, it was an honest-to-goodness silver screen, back in the early 1900's. It has fallen into horrible disrepair, but was reciently bought by a foundation which says they are going to rennovate and reopen the majetic State.

Post processing was a curves adjustment on the sky, clone out a dust spot (gotta clean that sensor!) a slight saturation boost, and a smart sharpen.

To crop the bottom of the sign or not? My artistic advisor (wife) said leave it, but I dunno... We'll see how the comments go! :)

Critique Club:
The light in this picture is just amazing. I like the crop. How you cut of the letters at the bottom draws my eyes to the STATE letters. I can almost feel the history of this building. The blue sky vs. the yellow building works well. Good use of complimentary colors. Good picture.

Good luck in future challanges.
Best regards, Arni

I think a better angle would have helped this shot. Perhaps moving back you could have gotten more of the E in State and less of the other sign. It's a bit disconcerting to see portions of words and not be able to read them. The lighting is very nice on this, though.

Brilliant colors and exposure. The foreground is not helping here at all. I might look to crop almost everything but the top third.

The complimentary colors add a bit of interest, but not enough for really high marks IMHO. Maybe a cleaner, more dynamic composition would help.

Wish I could see the E more

wonderful blue sky, maybe a different crop would give this more interest

This photo doesn't mean anything to me, in the sense that, I cant relate any meaning to the "state". Is it a cinema?
Technically, it's good, and the blue gradient looks nice.

I would have taken this photo at a different time of day. Do not get enough of the rust and decay.

I noticed last week, driving thru town, that they've really cleaned up the front of that building. I think it's that one anyway. Stopped and ate at Pancho Villa's while we were in town. ;^) I like the way the late day sun reflects off the State sign - nice composition the way you've framed this. Good luck in the challenge.

I'm not sure what this is. A cinema maybe? I like the yellow against the blue sky but overall this doesn't really grab me.
