I like this photo alot. The range of tones is excellent and the main figure is crisp and has an interesting face. The only negative I have is the background which is quite cluttered and distracts from an otherwise fine image. (I assume you could not control the background and it is, after all, his "environment")

hello again,

nice

the only thing i think that would have made this better is ifn he were actually doing something or looking at the camera. i get the sense of candid more than portrait.

nice shot though. i really like it.

I liked this shot. I was one of the few I guess that had no problem with the subjects not looking at the camera. The B&W works pretty well although I would like to see a version with some color - even if it was just a light saturation. Good focus and detail. Overall though you have a nice shot.

First, I really like the use of B&W in this picture - nice tonal range and clarity. I think this met the challenge well but I suspect some wanted the subject more posed and aware he's being photographed.

I like the square crop. I voted this an 8 in the challenge. I felt it fit the challenge well. It would have been nicer if he had been looking at the camera, but I didn't deduct for that like other voters. I'm not sure what the color version was like, but it might have done better as this is just a tad flat.

You've captured the subject in his environment well, but it would be a lot stronger imo if he was looking at the camera - would make it more portrait-ey and less candid-ey. Black and white suits, but the composition is very busy, and he doesn't stand out that well from the b/g. I'm not sure what you could have done about that, other then severe dodge/burn, or maybe kept some colour (not sure what the colours were like though)
Other than the busyness, the composition is well arranged, and suits the square crop. Lighting is good on the subject, but a lot of the right-hand side is in shadow.

I didn't get round to this in voting, but comparing to those I did vote on, would probably have voted a 6. I think the score is fair - you've met the challenge well but the busyness & candidness detracts, so isnt as powerful as some of the higher scoring ones.

Nice choice for an environmental portrait, but it looks to be more of a candid. Having him pose a bit for you would have certainly increased your score. Very close to another 6, so not bad overall.

The boat equipment is very busy in this unique image, I think B&W was a very good choice for this hard-working portrait. I wish he was looking a bit more toward the camera.

A decent attempt but this is more candid or documentary than portrait.

Iceland? At least it would be much better in color.

This shot has a lot of snap - the strong contrasts and the shapes pull your eyes right in!
