Great shot. You captured a look on his face that I find barely emotive as though he was so worn down he was almost apathetic. He eyes and the tilt of his head against the angles of his shirt and shoulders allows me to believe he is desolate. - 9 |

This is a very powerful photo, I'm not sure he makes me feel desolation, but definitely a sadness. |

I like the human aspect of this. Age. Wisdom. But it really has little to do with desolation. I can feel it, but I don't see it. Perhaps a different title would have guided me towards your intention. Nice photo, though. |

Great expression, good contrast, but title lacks creativity. |

How long do you have to frown before it molds your face? Awesome depiction of the MOOD of desolation! The background IS a little noisy though. Otherwise I may have given you my first ever (in my second round of voting) 10. Great pic! |

I think a better title might have been simply "Miguel." You captured the emotion well. He looks as though he's just lost his wife or someone else who was very important to him. The left part of the photo is overexposed. |

Your tio Miguel is a good looking guy! I like the neat way he's combed his hair. The picture does fit the idea of the challenge, even though I have a hard time thinking of your uncle as fitting "desolation". ~8 |

Love the portrait but lighting doesn't work for me. On one level one could say that having him in the shadow and not in the light is part of the sadness but to me it just seems that it's lacking in fill-in light. What wonderful expressive features though - you've captured that superbly.

I might like to see this same shot with a darker background. He does look very desolate but the curtains or wall behind him does not carry on the same effect. |

The light on the back side is too bright, but is a very expresive portrait |

now that is a very sad face - do you think there might be too much backlight? |

I think this is a particularly good photograph. Your uncle makes a great subject for a photograph. I also like the way he is separated from teh bright background and how the details in the 'age' on his face are still perfectly exposed. I think that the only possible improvement I can see for this image would be a little bit of catch lighting in his eyes... excellent shot :) = 10 |

Great subject, great expression on his face, great for this challenge. The only thing that I don't like is the backlighting which is always hard to get rid of. Maybe you couln't choose the angle and time, and it is quite nicely done if you consider the circumstances. Good luck |

nice face expression.. =) but it has a lot of shine in his right side.. change the orientation, or use something to diffuse the light.. but nice expression.. =) |

I think a tighter crop around the face might have drawn more attention to the eyes and brow, background seems wrong for the mood so I would have cropped it out |

This portrait was the first which caught my attention - The cheery print in the background adds to the contrast of the expression on his face. Purist of technicals will point that there is glare from the left but that literally pales into insignificance in light of excellence of capture [10] |
