Photographer’s Notes
• My daughter and I rode our Ducatis from Seattle to Paradise (Mt. Rainier) today … 220 miles round trip with lunch at the Copper Kettle Inn, or some such starting with “copper.” We had good weather although we got a little rain coming off the shoulder of Rainier. While there I took a photo of some dead trees.
• I used my wife’s Sony P&S because my D200 won’t fit in the pocket of my motorcycle jacket. By itself the tree is fairly arty but it doesn’t say failure. So I messed around with it a little in Photoshop CS2. Don’t worry, nothing illegal, but I pushed some basic tools far far beyond what would have been indicated by traditional photo editing.
• I like the result, but I expect this will not be well received by the DPC voters. Too much post processing. Too many artifacts. Maybe I can rescue it with a clever title (“Hey Bullwinkle that trick never works!”) But … well you never know. Maybe this will start a whole new genre.

Post processing
• Rotate
• Color Correct (Curves)
• Increase Saturation (Hue/Saturation)
• Increase Contrast (Brightness/Contrast)
• Crop
• Lightning Effect (Shadow/Highlight)
• Reduce Noise (Neat Image - Twice)
• Resize
• Save for Web

I think the highlight and shadows were a bit overdone in this image.

Best dead tree I've seen so far in this contest. Looks WAY oversharpened, but that adds to the moodiness of the image.

Amazing picture. The sky is a bit weird, choose a smaller size instead of reducing the quality too much. A bit more space on the left would have been nice to see those branches too. But overall really amazing picture, good idea!

Weird effect - so stark against the sky.

This image has IMPACT. Nice lines, texture, dramatic lighting, wild rhythum, and stunning contrast. But this tree's failure to survive caused your image to be a screaming success. Very well done!!

Beautiful. I don't know if I can really see "failure" in this one, but it certainly communicates some kind of "negative". Nice capture.8.

I like your composition and vantage point here, but the post-processing is just too much. The sky is too harsh while the lighting in the subject looks flat. It also looks like there was some dodging and burning in the workflow.
