Backlit by the sun, front-lit by a dedicated flash (SB-800). The camera mode was manual to achieve enough DOF. Circular polarizer to reduce reflections. It is kind of empirical (and I just started) since I used the wide angle diffuser on the flash and this makes the \'stupid thing\' automatically to use focus distance 17mm instead of the 105mm of my macro lens. The D70 produces lots of shadow noise at ISO 400. To reduce noise in the background areas where detail loss is not an issue I overlaid two layers with and without noise reduction (Neat Image) in PS. Beyond that there is some sharpening and level/saturation adjustments+cropping.

Very nice macro. I think the only thing that hurt you is the fact that not a lot of people will get this. On a photographic side it is near perfect. On a Architecture Challenge it is way out in left field. The DOF is great. And the green blurred background is great. Also beautiful colors in the wing. The focus seems a little off but that could just be part of the Neat Image thing. I am also not a big fan of the crop. Although you were trying to convey the whole wing thing on the dragonfly I think it would have been better to see the whole dragonfly or at least have a little taller of an image. Right now with the crop it looks like a pano.

So nice to see someone else thought of something besides a building for "architecture"...I really like the subtle shimmer of the dragonflies wings.

I see your point but you didn't even include the whole insect so the image is rather strange.

If one takes the time to ponder, this photo has some merits in the challenge. The structure displayed is quite architectural in its way.

... or cosequence of evolution. Great image and nice subject. I looked in the dictionary for the word architecture and the main explanation is something like this: "The art and science of designing and erecting buildings". It may have a litle broader meening but still I think you are streching the challenge subject a bit.

Not really getting architecture out of this shot. Focus is a bit soft.

This is a great macro however, I feel this does not meet the challenge. 4
